Dear Puzzled,
First you need to find where the state Penitentiary was in 1885 for NE.
Second, I think I would write for the court records, as that should state
exactly where he was living at the time as what you have written does not state
where he was living, and how long he was incarcerated. If someone posted bail,
or he was reprimanded to the custody of someone, they should have that
included.
Today, the NE State Pen is in Lincoln (on site with the original), with a
branch in Tecumseh.

STATE PENITENTIARY.
The Nebraska state penitentiary is located at Lancaster, about three miles
south of the city of Lincoln. Under grants from the congress of the United
States, by acts of 1864 and 1867, the state of Nebraska received 32,044 acres of
land for penitentiary purposes. The act providing for the building of the
state penitentiary on the site donated for that purpose by Captain W. T.
Donavan and Mr. Hilton, was passed March 4, 1870. W. W. Abbey, W. W. Wilson and F.
Tlemplin were appointed prison inspectors to attend to selling the land
granted by the government for prison purposes and to superintend the building,
$5,000 being appropriated for the erection of a temporary prison. The first
warden of the penitentiary was Henry Campbell. The institution has always ranked
high among the penal institutions of its class in the country.
NE State Historical Society has the following microfilm:
Commissioners Proceedings, Oct 22, 1877; Inmates No. 296, 297, 298, General
Index and Descriptive Record of Inmates, Nebraska State Penitentiary, Feb 22,
1867 - Dec 6, 1926, RG34, microfilm at NSHS (hereafter cited as Inmate
Record).

writes:

According to the Scotia Herald of March 25, 1885 a Tom Patton was arrested
for burglary and taken into custody.

A trail finally resulted in a disagreement by the jury--- they standing six
for acquittal and six for conviction. Patton's bail was reduced from $1,000
to $800.

The grand jury found indictments against Tom Patton for burglary.

At a later date in either late 1885 or early 1886 Tom Patton was convicted
of the burglary and sentenced to serve time in the penetenitary.

Can anyone tell me how I can find more information on this Tom Patton? His
parents? His siblings?

I would like to prove if this Tom Patton was or was not a great uncle of
mine.

I would appreciate any suggestions on where I could find infomation on this
Patton.

Thank you very much Spokane, WA
