Sandra,
Family Tree Maker sells an 1850 Census CD which might be worth the $30
investment. It is not guaranteed to be completely comprehensive in the time
period that it covers, but I purchased the 1860 Census CD made by Family
Tree Maker and found it to be very helpful. From the comfort of your home
you could very quickly scan 38 states for Hugh Neisler/Nisler/etc in the
1850 Census (even includes California). I have included a link to this
