Subject: [NEPAGS] 1880 Census CDs - research tip
Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 06:41:02 -0600
Hello:
I spent some time at our FHC researching the new LDS 1880 census CDs.
They are pretty neat!
Keep in mind when you are searching these, that multiple chances for
errors exist:
(1) errors made by the census takers back in 1880;
(2) errors made by transcribers in modern day.
These CDs provide typewritten results including BOTH the LDS film
number and the National Archives film number.
Your ancestors may NOT be listed under the given names or surnames
you would expect. For example, I found the following surnames:
STRINGHAM listed asSTINGHAM (no "R")
TATTON listed as TABBSON
SENTER listed as SOUTER
If you can't find your relative, DON'T GIVE UP! Try searching other ways.
Try searching by FIRST NAME (only). For example, to find my SENTER
family, I searched all three "S" CD's for any persons with the first
name of Harriet or Riley living in the State of California. (It
didn't take long since these were CDs).
Also, don't forget initials. For example, Cornelius TATTON was
listed as C. TABBSON. To find him, I had to search for the first
name of VARIOUS members of his family. Start your search of first
names with the most uncommon given name.
Good luck in your searches. Don't give up!
