The railroad line out of Lincoln southwest to Crete and then straight west to Grand Island was platted with alphabetical towns. Lincoln was the "A" Station, Berks was B, Crete was C, Dorchester, Exeter, Fairmont or Friend (I forget which), Grafton, Hastings?, Inglewood, Juniata, Kenesaw, and L was Grand Island.

Berks didn't make it as a town, but as I recall was the site of a Nike air defense missle base in the 1950's [helping to protect the headquarters of the Strategic Air Command at Offutt Airbase in Omaha -- see Dr. Strangelove movie "Peace is our Profession" sign].

I'll check in my Saline County history books to see what I can find about Berks.

Lincoln to Crete is 25 miles (rectangular coordinates), and stations tended to be about ten miles apart (The railroad was more of a hypoteneus.)
