Adrian Robert Buckles was born May 9,1928 just north of the present day county shed in Merriman, NE to James and Mary Maude Schultz Buckles.
Bob attended school in Guthrie, Okla. and graduated from Gutherie High School in 1946. Bob's lifelong love of sports was nurtured throughout his school years as he participated in football and basketball at Fogarty Jr. High and Guthrie High School. As a Guthrie Bluejay, Bob's prowness at kicking field goals and shooting a basketball were wll known. In Bob's adult years, baseball, horseshoes, golf and town-team basketball were all sports he relished. As the "Skelly" cowboy his roping ability was also without question.
On Jan. 16,1947, Bob married Mary Frances (Peed) Swanson. Bob and Mary made their home in Merriman where Bob entered into the gas station business. Bob and Mary raised two children, Robert Glen and Michael Lynn. Bob built his business from 1946 until his death on June 28,1991.
Bob built his new station in the summer of 1961 and became a fixture in Merriman and along Highway 20. The station not only provided gas, oil and tires but also a lot of "advice" for those who stopped for morning coffee. The station was also an early promoter of the "self-service" concept, especially on Husker football Saturdays.
Bob was widely known for his love of cattle and has establised a topnotch herd any rancher would be proud to own.
In addition to his wife Mary Frances, Bob is remembered by his sons and their families: Robert Glenn and wife Cindy, children; Angie and Tony; Michael Lynn and wife Kim, children Jason and Tigh. He is also survived by brothers: Frank of Martin, Charles of Kadoka, SD, Ben of Gordon and sisters; Ava McBeth of Gordon and Marie Jones of Osborn, Missouri.
Preceding Bob in death were his parents, 3 brothers: Jim, Irland and Roy and one sister Bell Dohlgren.
Funeral services for Bob Buckles were held July 1,1991 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Gordon. Interment followed at the Gordon Memorial Cemetery.
