Carl Edward Ness, 89, a longtime resident of Alamogordo, died Sunday, June 15, 2003, at his home, following a long battle with Alzheimer's. Carl was born April 17, 1914 in Petersburg, Alaska where he lived until he attended the California School of Fine Arts and the Western Academy of Design in San Francisco. While serving in the Merchant Marines during World War II he suffered a shipboard accident and was hospitalized in San Francisco and then Ft. Stanton for several years. While recuperating at Ft. Stanton he operated the base store and continued working in several art mediums, particularly water color. After coming to Alamogordo in 1953, Carl worked as a design draftsman for Dynalectron Corporation until his retirement in 1979. From 1968 until 1985 he and his wife owned and operated the Pic Frame. After selling the Pic Frame he continued to work out of his home studio showing his work in various art shows around the state. He was staff artist for New Mexico Farm Bureau pu!
blications. His lifelong passion for art afforded him many friendships in the art world, including Peter Hurd. His prints hang in the homes of friends, colleagues and admirers around the world. As an artist, father, brother, jokester, hunter and fisherman, he will be greatly missed. He was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church; the Merchant Marine Association; and the B.P.O. Elks Lodge #1897. Survivors include two daughters, Caryl Ann Gutheinz and her husband, Lee of Albuquerque, and Linda Ness Gulley and her husband, Jim of Alamogordo; a son, Erik Ness and his wife, Sharon of Las Cruces; five grandchildren, Emily Ness of Albuquerque, Ray Gutheinz of St. Louis, Missouri, Kierston Cunnington of Austin, Texas, and Erik and Garrett Ness of Las Cruces; four step grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; a brother, Leo Ness of Petersburg, Alaska; and a sister, Ragna Ness of Seattle, Washington. He was preceded in death by his parents, Erick and Agnes (Anderson) Ness; and by his!
wife, Frances Marie Ness, in May of this year. Funeral Services will be conducted Friday at 10:00 a.m. in the Hamilton-O'Dell Chapel with the Rev. Mike Struck officiating. Committal Services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Ft. Stanton Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, 1334 N. Scenic Dr., Alamogordo (505) 437-0530.
