Arline - Would you mind looking in the book for my relative? Her name was Amelia "Mit" Raymond/Rymond and she was also known as Mrs. Smith. She owned a saloon in Virginia City and was shot in the head by a customer in 1874. Reports of the murder were published in The Territorial Enterprise. Her saloon was located at 112 South C street and known as the San Francisco Saloon. In 1856, Amelia was one of the first group of women arrested for keeping an ill house of fame in Sacramento when a new law was enacted to prosecute owners of such establishments. Supposedly, upon Amelia's death, her adopted daughter (her name was not reported so I don't have it) was cared for by Rose Benjamin. Rose is listed in the 1870 federal census in Virginia City as a prostitute. I have no other information on Rose. Perhaps she is listed in the book? I would appreciate very much any information you could provide. Sincerely, Jeanne Johnson
