Hello,
I am new to the List, having joined because I have recently been provided a picture of my g-g-grandmother, Delilah PALMERTON (b. 1818, Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY). The features are unmistakable and I would say that she's at least 1/4 Native American. At last I know where I inherited my slanted eyes from as well as at least one other NA physical trait.
Delilah m. John Henry McARTHUR (b. 4 May 1812, Crawford Twp., Simcoe Co., Ontario, Canada) 11 Oct 1835 in Penfield Twp., Calhoun Co., MI.
She was the daughter of Sylvanus PALMERTON Jr. (b. May 1783, Dryden, Tompkins Co., NY) and Jane BOURNE/Bourns (b. May 1789, prob. NY).
Sylvanus' paternal grandfather was said to have been a native of France (the surname having changed in spelling/pronounciation), serving on the side of the English in the French & Indian War. His father, Sylvanus Sr., was believed to have been born in CT about 1740. I have found no record of his wife and have come to believe that she may well have been Native American.
I believe that the same thing has happened on my McArthur line as well. John Henry is believed to be the son of Alexander McARTHUR (b.c. 1783). Again, no record or reference to the name of his wife, only that she died after giving birth to possibly as many as 12 children (that would do it!) and that the family was back and forth between Canada and NY at least a couple of times.
The French and the Scots were both well known for intermarriages with the indigenous peoples. I would be happy to share this photo with anyone who might be interested in seeing it and hope that maybe someone might be able to point me in the right direction on how to go about researching this group. This is area of research is completely new to me but I'm thrilled to have found it! Especially so, since I am an adoptee and this is my biological line.
Thanks in advance for any scrap of information!!!
Best,
SueB
