Greetings to you all
Hope the following arrives OK <VBG>
My gt g/father Peter CUMMING and his wife Eliza SHEPHEARD together with
their two children, Andrew, my g/father, aged 2 yrs and Annie age 8 mths
arrived in NZ on the ship "Strathnaver" in 1874. Listed with them on the
shipping records is a James CUMMING who is stated as being 12 yrs old and
born in Edinburgh.
Eliza SHEPHEARD was born at Little Port Cambridgeshire 1854 to John
SHEPHEARD and Ann WISEMAN.
At the present time I have not been able to link James into any of the
family. The age gap between Peter and James are too close to be father and
son. It has been suggested to me that if James was small for his age he
could have been older than it was stated on the shipping records. I would
love to hear from any of James' descendants.
In 1879 Peter's two younger brothers William and John arrived with their
wives Christina and Jane FLEMING, who were sisters. William and Christina's
children were Margaret aged 3 yrs and Peter aged 1 yr. John and Jane's
children were Andrew 6 yrs James 4 yrs Mary (Margaret) 2 yrs. they arrived
on the ship "Rangitiki" 1879.
Peter and his brothers were born in 1849, 1851 and 1854 at Mussleburgh.
Their parents were Andrew CUMMING born 1820 Newton Sct and Jane MURDOC(H)
born 1823 Inveresk Sct. They were all miners. Peter and his brothers were
all married in Glasgow.
These families were in the Canterbury area for sometime before going to the
Westcoast settling in Taylorville and Denniston. Peter took his family first
to Tasmania where one son died on the trip there and a daughter was born in
Hobart. They then went to Victoria where they had another two children
before coming back to NZ in the early 1900s.
If you are a descendant of any of the above it would be great to hear from
you as I do have info on all of the above.
Happy hunting
Pauline
