Hi Errol, and also NZ Listers who may be interested
"THe Halcione" sailing ship which fits your description features in White
Wings Vol 1 and Volume 11 by Sir Henry Brett , landed 337 immigrants at
Napier on 4 Jul 1874 Their is an illustration on p 74 of Vol1 and a 2 page +
write up on the ship . Built in 1869 she did 26 voyages to N.Z. and was
owned by the Shaw Savill Shipping Line . She was wrecked at Wellington Heads
. Built in Greenock by Steele she was specially built for the NZ trade, .Her
tonnage 843 . Originally one of the first iron full-rigged ships, In 1888
her rigging was changed to that of a Barque. Never a real flyer she did the
trip on 3-4 occasions in 87 days.
A Black and White illustration in Vol 1 of "White Wings" illustrates the
ship at anchor, and has the rigging configuration of a barque, although no
sails are visible.
"White Wings" may be in a reference library in Australia
There is a lovely Watercolour Reproduction of the "Halcione" by G W White,
as a full rigged ship opposite page 65 in
Sail to New Zealand the Story of Shaw Saville & C0 1858-1882
by David Savill
ISBN 0-7090-2809-1 Published in Gt Britain 1986
If you have no luck, I do have scanner, and could send you an image, as long
as we don't breach copyright laws
I am also a Photographer and could probably organise a photographic print,
if you wanted something other than a digital file.
I was fortunate, to find both Volumes of White Wings in a second hand shop,
about 2 years ago, for just $20.00 the pair, they are in mint condition, and
am happy to do look ups, and photocopies of relevant details if required.
Although most NZ reference libraries have copies
Yours
