Subject: [NZ] Single women from Ireland

I have recently found my Gt. Grandmother on the passenger list of the Waikato, Plymouth - Lyttelton in 1877. I am suprised that the passenger list is almost entirely single, Irish farm or house servants with just a few family groups. Can someone explain the reason for this and why the Irish sailed out of Plymouth and not Ireland.
