I was in a similar position - I contacted the Local Archives first - in my
case it was Dunedin (for Southland). The confirmed that they had documents
relaating to the probate and, after my sending a cheque for the amount
needed (they advise that and it depends on the number of pages photocopied),
they sent me the documents.
You get your first search free, and after that you have to pay for the
search and the copies of the docs.
