Hi Leith,

Your message is correct in general. However, this is what I was told by the
staff at the New Plymouth LINZ Office. The LINZ records relating to land in
Taranaki will go to the Hamilton Office once the New Plymouth Office closes.
Regularly accessed records will be retained in Hamilton, while less
"popular" documents will go to the main Wellington depository. When I asked
specifically about the wills, the answer was vague, the person at LINZ
thought they "may" also go to Wellington.

Even if the wills go to Wellington or are retained in Hamilton, the Hamilton
Office traditionally does not apparently offer a mail order service for
copies of wills. Anyone wanting a copy of a will now has to go personally
to the Hamilton Office to view and copy the will. It is unknown if this
attitude/policy will change once the New Plymouth records arrive. Any
records accessed from the Wellington depository may take a few days to
arrive in Hamilton before they are accessible. The cost of accessing wills
(presently $2 if you go in personally) may also skyrocket once national
depositories get involved.

I am concerned that this precious resource is going to be either limited in
its accessibility or priced out of the reach of genealogists once regional
offices close. Is anyone on the list from Southland who can tell us the
situation down there now that the Invercargill Office has closed? Yes, you
can get copies of wills from Archives NZ (who have a more complete inventory
of NZ wills), but look at how much they charge for a copy of a will if you
order by mail.

I will check when I go into LINZ today and see if there is an update
regarding wills and their access.

Michael.
