Another interesting find among old books and papers:
"The 1859 Nelson Directory and companion to the Almanack, compiled by
J.L.Bailey." Reprinted 1969.
It contains many names for the Province of Nelson, including the provincial
government, education, town of Nelson (auctioneers, bakers, booksellers,
boot and shoe makers, blacksmiths, etc etc), public offices and societies;
advertisements; and lists of the more important people in many small towns:
Wakapuaka
Stoke
Richmond
Hope
Spring Grove
Waimea West
Wakefield
Upper & Lower Moutere
Motueka
Riwaka
Motupipi
Takaka
Collingwood
Wairau
Pelorus Valley
There's a section headed "Monthly Memoranda and Calendar of Gardening
Operations" - eg
September: Transfer of Publicians' Licenses on first Tuesday.
Continue to sow vegetable seeds, including turnips; transplant rhubarb,
asparagus and artichoke roots; sow carrots (4lbs seed to the acre); sow
onions.
Errr - 4 lb seed?? I'd be happy to look up names within such sections, but
remember it is not Indexed.
