Hi Christine
The 'Wises Directories' show 'Alexander McDONALD, farmer, Rockville' thru' 1922-1940, at the least.

The 1941 Motueka Electoral Roll shows: McDONALD Alexander, dairy farmer, Rockville; Alexander Thomas, Farmer, Rockville; Eleanor Amelia, married, Rockville.

The 1949 Miramar (Wellington) Electoral Roll shows: McDONALD Alexander, retired, 63 Queen's Drive; Eleanor Amelia, married, same address; Christina Margaret, spinster, same address.

There is a burial recorded at Karori Cemetery (Wellington) in 1950 for Alexander McDONALD that I will follow up in the newspaper and let you know if he's the one!!
