Back in 1994 when I was researching for the LEPPER family reunion, I found the
burial records of one member of Lucy LEPPER's descendants. which stated that
the family resided at Rocky Nook. The child, Reginald MOORMAN was born at
Rocky Nook and died of whooping cough. The father was a Tramway Employee. At
that time I was heavily involved with the Bulletin Board System and posted some
messages asking where it was. I received many replies, but one I will quote:

"Rocky Nook Bowling Club in Fowlds Park, Mt Albert is linked to New North Rd by
Rocky Nook Avenue. These two facts are only relevant to the extent that they
demonstrate the unreliability of present place names in indicating original locations,
for the club and street are some 4-5 kilometers west of the true location of Rocky
Nook.

In the 1961 publication "On Old Mt Albert" by D Scott, commissioned by the council
to mark the 50th Anniversary of its constitution, there are three references to Rocky
Nook.

1: The city end of the borough was originally known as Rocky Nook.

2: In 1899 the Eden Terrace, Mt Roskill and Mt Albert district road boards agreed to
share the cost of installing a gas lamp at Rocky Nook. In the same year (1989) the
Mt Albert Road Board approved a proposal from the Auckland Tramway Company
"to bring the electric tramway into the district" (more quoted here)

3: is about a tram disaster which killed 3 people in 1903 .....(quote)....Gathering
great speed it ran for half a mile from Eden Terrace back to Rocky Nook where it
crashed head-on into another loaded city-bound tram.

The original message goes on to say "it would appear the location of Rocky Nook is
an area bisected by New North Road, situated between Dominion Road in the east
and Sandringham Road in the west. In the centre of this are is the original location
of the Rocky Nook Bowling club.

The above was sent to me by a John MORTON on 9 Mar 1994. I hope he (and
others) will forgive me for quoting part of his message on this list.

Regards
