Perhaps a page of use could be

Beside the UK, NZ & AUS codes, I present a couple of examples.

As for New Zealand, most non-genealogical readers will identify with
current provincial / county areas. These are often assocaited with our
sports organisations. "... They are loosely defined and have no legal
identity or political reality."; N.Z. Encylopaedia, 1974). The NZSG does
not distinguish between older and modern counties. Political & council
administrative names have very little value - except to the researcher who
might want to write to one of those organisations or come across a document
that mentions a 'county' that does not appear in today's geography. The
differences can eaily be written in the NOTES of an individual in a
database or appendix in a book etc.
My feeling is that it matters not where the place WAS, but where the
place IS when I go to visit or look it up on a map NOW.
It may help to know, for example where Van Diemans Land was when visiting
Tasmania today, or that N.Z was once a province of NSW, AUS. when seeking
documentation for NZ before 1840.

That's my neck on the block.
