Hi all,

I was hoping that I may be able to pick the collective brains of those on
this mailing list for some ideas on how it may be possible to make a living
from genealogy related work (genealogy purists please look away now).

I am currently in the process of changing direction in my employment
situation and would love to be one of those lucky people that work in a
field that they love and are enthusiastic about. One of my biggest passions
is genealogy and New Zealand cultural history and it is an area that I would
love to work in.

Is it possible to do something that I really enjoy and still make a living
out of it? I know that the New Zealand genealogy scene is based on wonderful
people freely exchanging information and helping each other out of a common
love for family history, and I wouldn't want to interfere with that, but I
would love to try and contribute something to the field, but also be able to
afford to live at the same time.

I know there are professional genealogists out there who search through
records for a fee but that's not really what I'd be interested in. I would
love to be able to find some source of funding to help me discover old
paper-based records collecting dust in old museum and library collections,
and perhaps convert them to some kind of digital record. I know lots of
lovely people on this list already do this work for free, and I would love
to do that myself, but a girl's also got to eat and have a roof over her
head.

Does anyone have any ideas on where I may be able to find funding for this
type of work or other ideas on employment ideas related to this field? I
apologise if this all sounds very mercenary but I really would love to find
some way of marrying my enthusiasm for genealogy with employment.
