I think Taranaki as a name for this mountain just may have been there a
little longer than 'a few years'!! It's simply that many places which had
Maori names previously, were given English names by their 'discoverers' and
that's what most of us grew up with. Personally I prefer the Maori names as
they usually have a meaning or a legend attached to them - always an
interesting aspect of place names when visiting other countries. Regards,
