"All bushmen were runaway sailors"



Some of his old shipmates seeing him on the road immediately called out
their recognition and his overseer, who was a midget with the voice of a
lion, yelled out that no straight-backs were allowed there. He promptly
stuck his pick in the ground and walked off.



2. What did the overseer mean by "no straight-backs were allowed"?



"the whole job was L12 each"
3. Is that the same as 12 pounds?
