from a 'Short History of the Hauraki Regiment' by C W Vennell in the Journal
of the Tauranga Historical Society No.8 Oct 1957.
In 1867 the Opotiki Rangers Rifle Volunteers was the earliest volunteer
unit. In the next 25 years there 20 units including 9 at Thames. The
Hauraki Regiment formed in 1898 as 2nd Battalion Auckland Rifle Volunteers
with HQ at Paeroa included among others, the Hauraki Rifle Volunteers,
Thames.
