Thanks to the search feature in Papers Past, I have just discovered a
long lost great-uncle John Davidson ROBINSON. According to family
recollection he died in the Boer War, but there was no trace of him in
the NZ Boer War records and so I was beginning to doubt the story.
It turned out that he was a trooper in the Cape Mounted Rifles and died
of a fever in Dec 1902 (after the war ended), aged only 19,.in King
Williams Town.
The Cape Mounted Rifles appear to have been a regular South African Army
unit based in King Williams Town. Does anyone know anything about them
or why a New Zealander (especially one so young) would belong to such a
unit?
Kind Regards
Murray
