Apologies folks I accidentally hit the 'Send' Button - having a Seniors
moment - however just to add a comment that might help - a name is never
started in lower case - at least not a English origin name. So ' ff ' is not
a name unless the person writing it is illiterate then he wouldn't be
writing it! Grammar conventions as far back as the 17th Century always start
Names or Nouns in Caps

As I said to Peter Off List - To the best of my knowledge no title is ever
put in the middle of a persons name but always precedes a name as the title
is considered more important than the name and so ranks first as in Sir
Walter Raleigh, Right Honourable Fred Smith etc. On odd occasions you might
see Initials after but these are - more often than not - military
decorations. As in Wing Commander Fred Smith DSO DSM and Bar or VC etc

I think what you have is simply sloppy writing and my best guess is 'H' as
in E. H. Ward
