Hi Chris,

"Could SKS do a look-up for a marriage between Alexander Forbes BAXTER
and Florence Mary [surname unknown]. Alexander was born circa 1893 in
Invercargill, NZ and died 15 November 1931 in Christchurch, NZ. Also is
there a birth index that can confirm/narrow down my search for
Alexander's birth?"

On the NZSG CD "New Zealand Marriages 1836-1956"
(http://www.genealogy.org.nz/Sales_11.aspx?CategoryId=11) there is one
marriage for a man of the name you have given, who married Florence Mary
NORMAN in 1919 (folio 2175).

This information (the two names, year, and folio number) are sufficient
to go to Births, Deaths & Marriages (BDM, http://www.bdm.govt.nz/) and
order a *printout* of the marriage registration.

See the document at
http://www.dia.govt.nz/pubforms.nsf/URL/FamilyRecordResearch.pdf/$file/FamilyRecordResearch.pdf
for information about what you would find on the printout, plus more.

Yes, there are birth indexes, but they are only on microfiche. I don't
know where you would find a set in Canada, sorry. Perhaps someone
reading this list who has access to them will be able to look up the
fiche for you?

If you are a member of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG,
http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) you should use their Research Service to
get lookups of the resources you can't access from that distance. Once
you've got that marriage printout, you'll have a better idea what years
to start looking at. And don't forget to check with the Certificates
Collection (another service for NZSG members) to see if they are holding
anything of interest to you before going to BDM and spending money.

One further resource for you, since you have mentioned Christchurch, is
the parish register indexes held at the Christchurch Public Library.
These contain details of baptisms, marriages and burials at churches in
the Canterbury area. If someone is able to visit and look your names up
for you, it can take you a long way in your research. It's possible
that the full marriage information is recorded there (removing the need
to purchase from BDM), or the baptisms of their children, giving you
their names and roughly when they were born (date of birth is not always
recorded, if I recall correctly).

Do you know when Florence died? There is a 1952 probate on Archway
(http://archway.archives.govt.nz/), the online index for Archives New
Zealand (http://www.archives.govt.nz/) for a woman with her name, a
widow of Christchurch. Both Alexander and Florence are listed on the
Christchurch City Council's online cemetery database -
http://librarydata.christchurch.org.nz/Cemeteries/

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy Howard
