Further to my message below please remember that it is only an index of BDM's registered with Department.
I have found quite a number of my early family members are not included so be aware this is only one tool to use in finding your early family members.
One of my families only has 9 of their 14 children listed.
Another line does not have my Grandfathers birth in 1878 listed.

Appears to be very useful.
http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/

You can put in a surname and date and get all the records for that name.
