Subject: [nz] Confusing Birth certificate from the NZ BDM registry PIERLO
Date: Fri, 17 Jul 2009 18:04:01 +1000

I was hoping some one on the list may be able to shed some light on the
confusion I have after receiving the latest birth cert I received from NZ as
I live in Australia and it is hopeless trying to get hold of BDM and/or
asking them questions over the phone and I don't think they would be
forthcoming with answers anyway as I think it is a privacy thing.

I sent away for an 1890 birth printout for an Arthur James PIERLO but
instead recieved a typed document and a covering letter stateing that they
were unable to issue the printout in the handwritten format due to
legislation that has been passed since the event. It does not say what
legislation just that the "effect of the legislation is that certain
information must be treated as though it was never registered". It also
states that it is not possible for them to advise of what was removed.

Sarah Ann PIERLO is listed as the mother right age and birth place so I am
sure it is the former Sarah Ann HARVEY my Great Grandfather's sister.

There is no father's details and the Birth place is recorded as Wallsend
which is rather strange as I am not aware of a Wallsend in NZ only NSW
Australia.

I am not sure what this all means. But think it is one of 3 things.

1. the child is recorded as illigitamite on the original certificate and
this is not allowed any more.

2. the child was subsecuently adopted

3. the child later changed his name.

These however are only calculated guesses and some one else may have better
ideas.

A little background on the family concerned:

Sarah Ann HARVEY married Adolph Aguidius Albert PIERLO a Baker in Foxton New
Zealand in 1881

They had a son Alfred Agidius PIERLO born in 1882 in Wellington.

The marriage seems to have detereiated and the couple parted shortly after
Alfred's birth as I have found accounts of Alfred appearing in court in 1883
and 1884 for failing to support Sarah and the child Alfred.

I have found some references to school records on the NZSG disk for Alfred
PIERLO attending the Terrace school in 1892, Upper Hutt School in 1893 and
then back to the Terrace Wellington in 1896. Mrs Pierlo listed as guardian.

Sarah Ann PIERLO died in 1945 aged 89 and is buried at Karori cemetery
Wellington with her parents William and Eliza Harvey and an elder brother
William.

According to her death cert she had no living issue.

I have been trying to find out what happened to her husband and more
importantly her 2 children Alfred Agidius b1882 and Arthur James PIERLO
b1890 but to no avail and this latest certificate has only added to the
confusion.

Any assistance with either the *typed thing* I receieved as it definately
was'nt a printout and you couldn't call it a certificate or info on what may
have happened to these people would be very much appreciated as I am at a
complete loss and would really like to know what happened to them.

I look forward to any replies
