I know of several sailors who jumped ship, possibly during the War (2nd) one was caught and had to serve a few months in jail, the other one wasnt caught, but both stayed in NZ, eventually the one who had been caught did return to England many decades later.. they didnt have much to return to England for anyway, so New Zealand was to be their home. Both bought up in Boys Homes in Dorset.
