Good morning Listers,
I think the world's eyes were on what happened on the 12th Sept in the early
morning hours in Christchurch. When I turned on the TV here in Sydney, the
Morning Show was broadcasting stories about the quake and how the people of
the city were faring, continually. Early pictures were coming through and I
was shocked at what I was seeing, as was my family. I sent off an email to
a girl I worked with here in Sydney, who sold up her home in Manly after
living here for 34 years and moved back to Christchurch, with her husband in
February this year, to be close to her NZ family. Where they are now living
they were lucky, however there were some breakages and they are still
feeling the after shocks. When she sent out her thank you email to all
those who contacted her and her husband there was over 50 email addys on the
email, and on top of that, the phone she told us had not stopped ringing,
from all around the world.
Another friend I rang immediately, who now calls Australia home, whose
mother and four sisters and their families live in Christchurch, very close
to the distruction and poor thing she was a mess, with worry. Her mother is
terrified and is not sleeping well, she stays dressed when going to bed and
is sleeping on the lounge near the front door. My friend's neices and
nephews are getting sick and there is no school. They had lost water and the
sewarge system was effected. I and many of Jo's friends offered her to come
and stay, so we could give her comfort and help her through this worry.
The TV news is still giving up-dates on the crisis and so are all the major
newspapers and we are all worried about the after shocks. Australia has not
forgotten their cousins over the ditch and even though we love to take the
mickey out of you all, the closeness of the two nations would not be matched
any where else in the world. I think we all know and respect the meaning of
the ANZAC spirit and the words "Lest we Forget".
Regards,
Janice
