Many thanks to Kevin and everyone who replied to my post. :-)
I still don't know anything more about Joseph's life in New Zealand.
I'm going to have to make an effort to access some directories of the
time to see if he's listed.
I _suspect_ that Joseph and Jane Ann emigrated to New Zealand on the
ship "Canterbury", which departed Greenock in 1879
(http://www.angelfire.com/az/nzgenweb/otherOtago.html found via the NZSG
shipping database). Is "Jas" a shortening of "Joseph"? This Jas has
the right age, and listed after him is Mrs Jane Annie Howard. According
to the Otago Daily Times dated 28 Jan 1880, page 2, the "Canterbury"
arrived at Port Chalmers from Glasgow, under Captain Leslie.
I'd love to know of a full passenger list for this sailing, if one can
be found. The one at
http://www.yesteryears.co.nz/shipping/passlists/canterbury.html says it
I have expanded my knowledge of his wider family...
I now know that William John LEYBOURNE, who is first described as
Joseph's step-son in the 1861 census, and then as his son as John
Leybourne HOWARD in the 1871 census, came to New Zealand in 1877 on the
ship "Gainsborough" under his original (birth) name.
He then sponsored his (half?) brother and sister when they emigrated to
New Zealand on the ship "Westland", arriving in Canterbury in 1880.
(Thank you for showing me, Kevin, that I have to look at more pages of
the manifest than just the first one I find with the names of interest
William married Thomazine Carter SNELL in 1884, and they had two
children - Harold Ernest Howard LEYBOURNE in 1886 and Leonard James
Rookwood LEYBOURNE in 1888. Thomazine died in 1888, and I have no
knowledge of William after that.
I suspect that some SNELL relative named their child for Thomazine in
the year she died - I spotted a Thamzine Carter SNELL in the birth
indexes, registered in 1888, to parents James Edward and Elizabeth. I
was looking to see if Thomazine was born in New Zealand - I've since
found a likely entry in the English registers, in the June quarter of
1857, registered at Penzance.
Their children both married. Harold married Myrtle May HAYNES in 1913;
Harold died in 1966 and Myrtle in 1964; she is buried in the Waimate
Lawn Cemetery. Leonard married Rachel HANSEN in 1914; Leonard died in
1945 and Rachel in 1947.
There are probate files held at the Archives New Zealand office in
Christchurch that I'd like to look at - could someone visit for me and
tell me any names of family members that are mentioned, please?
Leonard James R LEYBOURNE - Southbridge - Farmer, 1945, Christchurch
Box/Item 418 /
Record No. CH24689/1945
Racheal LEYBOURNE - Southbridge - Farmer, 1947, Christchurch High Court
Box/Item 441 /
Record No. CH26614/1947
Myrtle May LEYBOURNE - Waimate - Married Woman, 1964, Timaru District Court
Box/Item 146 /
Record No. TU327/1964
William Thomas LEYBOURNE - Southbridge - Driver, 1995, Christchurch High
Box/Item Box52 /
Record No. CH776/1995
(I'm hoping this man is a son of Leonard and Rachel, based on his location)
I have a request in at the New Zealand Society of Genealogists (NZSG,
http://www.genealogy.org.nz/) Research Service for a lookup of the
Seton-Kellaway Collection microfiche, for the reference to William
Thomas Carter LEYBOURNE that Kevin told me about. Might be a descendant
of this family. How did you know about that, Kevin?
That's enough from me for now. Thanks again for all the help I've been
given, and in advance for any that's yet to come. :-)
