Hi everyone
I admit I am a little slow getting started but I have finally dipped my toe in
the water! I have some papers my mother saw fit to keep and one of them was
my grandmother's SS card. At first IL couldn't figure out why she would have
one as she never worked after 1936 and then it dawned on me that she got it
for Medicare or Medicaid. My mother did this also. So having her number IL
went into ssid.ancestry.com (etc) and was able to pull up her record. I have
her birth and death date, and where she died. They also have a letter written
which I printed. It has all the info SS will need, except my name, address
and telephone number, which I filled out. So I made out my check and sent it
away the other day and am now dug in for a long wait. Gram was born in
Germany and immigrated with her family some time in the 1880's or 90's.
Hopefully her application will give me some clue.

Also, a couple of weeks ago I took my son to SF Presidio National Cemetery to
his Great Grandparents grave. First time he was there since he was a small
child.

Papers my mother didn't keep? All the family albums and any thing about my
father except marriage certificate and annulment decree.

Sorry this is so long and hope you don't think I should have know all this
sooner.

ps I try to always sign my name with my last initial because there are a
couple of other Joan's on the list.
