When I was working in a law department there was a question as to what a permanent record was because Xerox copies were not supposed to last forever, certainly my lifetime but the thought was that it would fade and possibly be unreadable in some period of time. Isn't this really what laser printing is? Hmmm.

Old photocopies fade much like thermal fax paper. Plain paper
photocopies are often on cheaper paper that often have a high acid
content. Some of my photocopies from 15 years ago are brittle while
others are in very good shape so it depends on the quality of the
paper.
