Speaking of Newmans from Ireland, Has anyone noticed a Dennis Newman in
your family or when you've searched passenger lists? My search leads me to a
Dennis Newman who had married a Sarah Ann Cuatt in upper Westchester County,
NY around 1840. I suspect he was a worker on the Croton Dam project. By the
1850 census Sarah Ann had already remarried a James Flannagan (children
Hester & Jacob Newman were still at home).
He may not have been Irish at all. It's a suspicion based on the prevalence
of Irish workers in construction at that time and the Irishness of the
second husband's name. I'v not been able to find Dennis in the large Newman
families of that area in that time.
