The Sonoma County Journal Aug. 22, 1856 Petaluma, Sonoma co. CA.

The Geysers:
For the information of persons about to visit these celebrated Springs
we would say, that Mr. RUDESILL has placed a tri-weekly line of coaches
on the route between Petaluma and these Springs; running in connection
with the San Francisco steamer. The road is completed to within some
five or six miles of the Springs, which distance is made on saddle
animals, furnished by Mr. R. The trip through can be made in one day. At
the Springs, ample Hotel accommodations are afforded there being two
houses.

We find in the San Francisco papers, notice made of the sudden death in
that city, on the morning of the 18th inst., of Mr. Mathias PURCELL,
formerly of Santa Rosa. A 'post mortem', examination of the body was
held by Drs. ROWELL and KIRKPATRICK, who reported his death to have been
occasioned by dropsy on the brain, superinduced by excessive drinking.
PURCELL is the same man who came near being burnt to death at Santa Rosa
a few months since at the time his house was consumed. His wife perished
in the flames.

Capt. James REYNOLDS, formerly of Philadelphia, committed suicide at San
Francisco, on last Friday - cause, insanity. Capt. R. served in the
Mexican war, as a Captain in the New Jersey regiment. He has been a
resident of California some three years, and for some months past was
employed in the U.S. Mint. Since his discharge, he has been unable to
procure employment and having a family East to provide for, became
depressed in spirits and finally committed suicide.

We are informed that the Board of Supervisors have appointed a committee
consisting of Messrs. D. KINZER, C. JACKSON, Wm. HILL, M. ARMS, W.R.
SWINERTON, and Geo. HARRIS, to decide upon a proper grade for Main
Street. A good move, this.
