LOCAL NEWS
Percy BISHOP of Harshaw is in the city, visiting.
D.W. EMERSON of Prentice was in the city yesterday.
Miss RAGAN of Tomah, is visiting relatives in this city.
H.H. FOSTER of Merrill, was a guest of the Mitchell Tuesday.
Mrs. R.S. DICKENS returned Wednesday from a visit at Milwaukee.
Mrs. W.E. BAKER of Harshaw, visited this city last Sunday.
W.A. FOSTER departed Monday for a trip to Milwaukee and Chicago.
Miss JOSTEN of Merrill, visited friends in this city the first of the week.
W.D. KOLLOCK, the Standard Oil man of Merrill, was in the city Tuesday.
Born, to Mr. and Mrs. John H. WOLFE, a boy, last Monday morning.
Superintendent J.H. FOSTER, of Babcock was here Monday and Tuesday.
The Woman's Literary Club meets with Mrs. D.P. HEATH next Monday.
Rev. and Mrs. W.G. BLOSSOM of Merrill were in our city last Sunday.
A baby girl was born to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas KILROE last Wednesday morning.
Attorney A.H. WOODWORTH attended court at Merrill the fore part of the week.
Dr. MONROE of Merrill, was in the city last Monday, on professional business.
Mrs. G.R. MANTHY of Hazelhurst, spent Sunday in the city visiting friends.
John McQUILLAN of Merrill, was in the city Thursday, a guest of the Mitchell.
A party of Good Templars took a sleigh ride to Tomahawk Junction last Saturday evening.
A little daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. E. BAYCOTT, of Tomahawk Junction
last Tuesday.
A baby boy put in his appearance at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L.P. ASH last
Saturday morning.
Mrs. A.E. HOFFMAN completed her school duties at Grandfather and yesterday
returned to Merrill.
Dr. and Mrs. J.D. CUTTER entertained Miss WHEELAN of Grand Rapids, Wis., the
fore part of the week.
The school at South Tomahawk will open next Monday, with Miss Clara KLEUTZ of
Merrill as teacher.
The Misses Mollie and Amanda THIELMAN of Merrill, visited relatives and
friends in the city this week.
Geo. MARSHALL, Ray HANOVER and Fred STYLUS of Woodboro, were in the city
Tuesday, guest of the Mitchell.
Gid YOUNG has returned from his trip to Michigan and is now out in the Spirit
river country looking over land.
Mrs. and Mrs. Wm. MCGEE are rejoicing over the arrival of a baby girl that put
in her appearance Friday of last week.
Joseph HAYES, section foreman of the Casnovia line passed through here last
Sunday, on his way to Mosinee, to visit his parents.
The Misses Lydia and Dorothea WHEELER of Wausau, were in the city Monday and
Tuesday, guests of Miss Maude HOWEN.
John STRICK of Ironwood, visited in this city the fore part of the week, and
incidentally attended the ball last Tuesday evening.
Mrs. Fred McWHITY departed for Omro Monday afternoon to attend the funeral of
her mother, who died suddenly last Sunday.
SUBURBAN NOTES
BAY MILL
Mills are running at full capacity.
G.R. GRAY is once more on deck.
F.W. SHULTZ is clerking in the new store.
Bay Mill Company offices are in their new quarters in the east end of store building.
The Town Clerks office, of the Town of Rock Falls has been moved to the store building.
When we get our Post Office going we will be in line, as we are on the main
line of the route.
The Standard Mercantile Company opened their store here February 16, 1897, and
are doing a good business.
Logs are still coming in night and day by the train load, consisting of Pine,
Hemlock, Cedar and Hardwood.
A new society has been formed at this place, all ladies of course, they held
their first meeting this week. The menu was old fashioned, brown bread and
baked beans.
The Arlington gave its annual ball Wednesday evening and it proved to be an
exceptionally brilliant affair as most of the guests were from Milwaukee, Eau
Claire and Tomahawk. Among those present were Messrs. and Mesdames A.M.
PRIDE, Wm. EIBEL, C.A. GASELL, and the Misses Tone BROWER, Maude HOWEN, May
SAWYER, Margaret VEITCH and Messrs. Dr. JOHNSTON, F.G. STARK, John FROEHLICH,
J.H. BUTCHER, R.D. EPPLEY, S.E. GILLETT and Wm. BARNEY of Tomahawk; Mrs. T.H.
BROWN of Milwaukee; Miss WILSON of Eau Claire and Miss Portia SHOWALTER of
Tomahawk. Dancing and singing was indulged in until one o'clock, closing with
an oyster supper. The acrobatic dancing by Messrs. STARK, BUTCHER, and Dr.
JOHNSTON received a hearty vote of thanks from all present, showing that the
hospitality of the Arlington was heartily appreciated.
CLIFFORD
George THOMPSON returned from Chelsea last Friday.
Mrs. T. THOMPSON has been quite ill during the past week.
Joseph KAVANAUGH expects to finish hauling bark this week.
Mr. SHELL of Oshkosh, has been in the city the past week, on business.
Mr. SHORT and Mr. KENEPECK are still looking up timber for Clifford & Company.
Wm. DALGLE has not fully recovered from his illness but enough so that he was
able to return home last Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. BALDROIN have returned to Madison, S.D. On their way home, they
will visit friends in St. Paul and Redwing, Minn.
Our fire department was called out Thursday morning of last week, to save our
school house from destruction. A good fire was started at about 7:45, and
while the teacher was at breakfast, the floor caught fire. No serious damage
was done however.
