newspaper_article: March 3, 1921. Death of Mrs. Virginia Shivers. Died, at
the family residence near this city, Sunday afternoon, Feb. 27, at 6 o'clock,
Mrs. Virginia T. Shivers, aged 68 years, wife of John M. Shivers. Funeral
services were held at the residence at 3:30 o'clock Monday afternoon, and
interment was had at Woodside Cemetery, Rev. L.H. Mathison conducting the
services. Mrs. Shivers was born Nov. 17, 1852. She was converted and joined
the Methodist church at the age of 28 and remained a Christian until her
death. She is survived by her husband and nine married children, all of whom
lived near their mother, it being according to her wishes. The surviving sons
are Emmett, Homer, Bill, Mills, Wayland, and Weaver, and the daughters are
Helen, Ida and Bea. The out-of-town relatives attending the funeral
included, G.M. Kuykendall of Lawton, OK, J.M. Kuykendall of Beckville, Mr.
and Mrs. H.T. Shivers of Beckville, and Mr. and Mrs. E.T.Porter and son
Birdie of Tyler,!
Mr. and Mrs. A.M. Harrison of Desdemona, and J.F. Milloway of Big Spring.
About four weeks ago, Mrs. Shivers, while setting out some Chichester
daisies, scratched the little finger of her right hand supposedly with a
briar. Her hand and arm were poisoned thereby, and the trouble not yielding
to treatment, it was decided an operation was necessary. On last Saturday
her right arm was removed above the elbow, Doctors Parrott, Cozby, Terry and
Rather performing the operation. Mrs. Shivers did not rally from the
operation, however, her death occurring the following day. Mrs. Shivers was
well and favorable known over this section as a good Christian woman, and she
had many friends who sympathize deeply with the family in their sad
bereavement. Following so quickly the accidental death of little Claxton
Stewart earlier in the afternoon, and also the result of an accident, the
death of Mrs. Shivers served to accentuate the feeling of gloom, depression
and grief which pervaded t!
his community last Sunday afternoon. >>
