Elijah W. PENDILL was born in Batavia, New York, December 17, 1809. He came
to Michigan from the east in 1855 and settled in Battle Creek, where he
remained for the rest of his life. When Battle Creek was incorporated as a
city in 1859 Mr. PENDILL was elected its first mayor and was alter twice
elected to that office. He was a man of sterling worth and always active in
the work for the progress and betterment of the city. He led the first
campaign ever waged against the saloon in Battle Creek. He died in this city
in 1876, leaving a record of service which is hard to excel.
