TWITCHELL, a daughter.
Married -- at Santa Clara, April 15, 1889, by Rev. M.E. BRIGGS, James
PRATHER to Miss Laura SHEPHERD, both of San Juan.
Married -- in San Jose, April 23, 1889, by Rev. A. CALHOUN, Mr. John
OCONNER, of Hollister and Miss Mary NIGGLE, of San Felipe.
*****A Wedding*****
John OCONNER of Hollister and Miss Mary NIGGLE of San Felipe were united
in marriage at San Jose on Tuesday by Rev. A. CALHOUN D.D. The groom is
the book keeper of Palmtag, Barg & Kleen, and one of our most trustworthy
and reliable young men; the bride is the daughter of Mr. John NIGGLE, the
esteemed Hotel proprietor of San Felipe. After the wedding ceremony the
happy couple took the train for Kings City from whence they went to
Bitterwater where the mother of the groom resides with her family. Mr.
and Mrs. OCONNER will live in the house of Mr. L.S. WOODS, in Chappells
addition.

S.H. COWELL and Louis DODERS of Santa Cruz were in town last week.
A.L. LEVINSKY, an attorney from Stockton has been in town this week.
W.K. GOFFs new two story residence on Fifth street is rapidly
approaching completion.
A. CARMICHAEL has returned from Los Angeles where he has been engaged in
school teaching.
W. McCARTHY, after using a type writer only three months, can write with
it over seventy words a minute.
Dr. HOWARD went to San Francisco on Tuesday to visit an oculist. It is
said that there is danger of losing his sight.
Geo. C. PORTER will remain in Philadelphia all summer. During the summer
he will be connected with a celebrated hospital.
Miss Lizzie GRAY, the talented and popular telegraph operator at the
McMahon House, is visiting her mother at Napa. Her vacancy is being ably
filled by George BLACK.

***San Juan, April 26, 1889 --
Mr. R. MERRILL visited Santa Cruz this week.
Mr. Russ CANFIELD has returned from Oregon.
J.J. SEARLE was down from the city this week on business.
Mrs. Thomas NYLAND is visiting relatives in San Francisco.
The little girl of Thomas WILLIAMS fell from a fence and broke her arm
one day this week. Dr. CARGILL set the arm and the little sufferer is
doing nicely.
Mrs. Pheobe HARRIS relict of the late Mr. E. HARRIS died at her home in
San Francisco Monday last. She was a former respected resident of San
Juan.
Mr. James PRATHER and Miss Laura SHEPARD, both of San Juan, were married
at the residence of the brides sister, at Santa Clara, April 15, 1889,
by the Rev. M.E. BRIGGS.
Brad FLINT, of San Francisco, and Mr. M. WESTON, of Michigan, were here
Monday visiting the San Justo rancho. Mr. WESTON is an old newspaper man
and was the editor of the first Gentile newspaper published in Salt Lake,
and was often attacked and driven out of town. Your correspondent was a
resident of Salt Lake at the time, and remembered the occasion well.
***Cottonwood, April 22, 1889 --
Marion CONKLING will try prospecting this week.
Mrs. CONLEY went to San Francisco one day last week.
Miss Cynthia WATSON is in Hollister spending a few days.
Mr. JOHNSON and Miss LADD, of Santa Ana, have been visiting Mr. REED of
this place.
Judge MYERS and Constable GONZALES, of Tres Pinos, attended the trial at
Capt. McILROYs on the 17th.
Hon. M.T. DOOLING, of Hollister, passed us on the 17th on his way to
Capt. R.H. McILROYs.
Mr. DARBY and son came down from the Panoche on Saturday on their way to
work on the Quien Sabe road.
Mr. Chas. HARDWICK arrived in Montana all O.K. last week. We wish the
young man a long and prosperous life.
A party of young folks, from Haywards, have spent several days pleasantly
with Mr. T. GOMEZ. They returned home on the 17th.
A surprise party was given at Mr. REEDs on Sunday evening, the 14th.
Mrs. WATSON, of Bartlett, is rather poorly again. This old lady has now
passed her eightieth birthday, which is beyond the allotted time. She has
stood the trials of this world well and may see a few summers yet. She is
in the care of her son, Jacob WATSON.
Mrs. CONKLING, sister-in-law of Marion CONKLING, gave a surprise party at
the latters residence on Friday evening, the 19 inst Good music was
afforded by Trinidad GERMAN.
***Willow Creek, April 9, 1889 --
The following pupils were placed on the Roll of Honor for the month of
March: May JONES, Lawrence SEVENMAN, John McGRURY, Lillie JONES, John
SEVENMAN, Gus SEVENMAN, Edith McGRURY, Nellie McGRURY, Frank SEVENMAN,
Lottie JONES, Winnie JONES. Lena WEEK, teacher.
*****Barn Burned*****
On Sunday morning a barn with all its contents belonging to Mr. J.C.
MILLER was burned to the ground. The barn was situated on Mr. MILLERs
ranch about four miles southwest of town. The fire is supposed to have
been started either by tramps or hunters. There were in the barn two
large farm wagons, two mowers, two gang plows, rakes, harrow, a seed
sower and twenty-five tons of hay. The total loss was $1400; insured for
$500.
*****Local Brevities*****
Joe ARCHIBALD is now clerking at the 69 store.
Mrs. L.T. BALDWIN has returned from a visit to San Jose.
James DUNNE and wife, when last heard from, were in Jerusalem.
N.C. BRIGGS went to the city Wednesday to attend the funeral of his
cousin.
L.M. LADD and G.S. NASH took a trip over to the San Joaquin this week.
Mrs. Ed. WILCOX and baby are visiting Mr. WILCOXs parents at Redwood
city.
Henry SNIBLEY has been very ill with a severe attack of indigestion. He
is now better.
Dave GRAY left Hollister on Tuesday morning for a trip to Oregon. He will
be absent some time.
G.G. JOHNSON, wife and daughter returned to Los Angeles yesterday morning
after an extended visit here.
Hon. T. FLINT Jr. is said to be threatened with an attack of typhoid
fever. It is to be hoped the report is false.
E.A. McCLOUD returned this week from Stockton where he has been employed
in contract work on the streets.
Assessor McPHAIL left on Monday to attend to his duties in the southern
part of the county. He will go as far as New Idria.
BRIGGS and HUDNER are moving into their new office in the Barg & Kleen
building. Their law rooms are fitted up in elegant style.
Dr. L.R. HOWARD has been ill the last two weeks, and confined to his room
with an attack of neuralgia, which has affected one of his eyes.
Charlie DOWDY is no longer connected with the Postoffice, and is paying
his sole attention to the business of the firm of DOWDY & BRIGGS; this
business is steadily increasing.
A. JOHNSON and wife left Hollister yesterday for Los Angeles where they
will reside permanently.
W.H. NORRIS, a prominent stock man from San Ramon valley, and well known
in this county by many old timers, has been in Hollister for a few days
past.
*****Quien Sabe Road*****
The matter of the Quien Sabe road stands as follows. All the deeds are
signed and ready for delivery, but Mrs. Nellie ARQUEZ insists that the
fence be allowed to remain as it is on her land, and that a new fence be
built for the road, thus chopping her land up into little patches. She
also insists on a payment of $50.
*****Sold for Taxes*****
The fine property on San Benito street, south of the planing mill, has
been sold for taxes. The buyer was E.B. MONTGOMERY and the price paid was
$3.74. The property is valued at $500 and the owner is supposed to be
Mrs. SWARTZ, whose residence is unknown.
*****An Accident*****
While driving to the circus Tuesday night Emmet HODGES, Will BROWN, and
Sam STONE had the misfortune to break a shaft of their buggy and also
sprung the axle. The boy didnt get sprung, however.
*****A Bicycle Trip*****
Irving LOGAN and Charles SHAW started on Tuesday morning early for a
bicycle trip to San Francisco. On the way they will visit Mount Hamilton
and the Lick Observatory. The trip will last a week.
*****Postponed*****
The sale of the Joaquin SILVA SERPE property, set for tomorrow, has been
postponed. Due notice will be given of its occurrence.
*****A New Store*****
It is reported that John WOOLERY will soon open a grocery store in the
Odd Fellow building next door to the Free Lance office.
*****All A Mistake*****
Sometime in February J.J. FAY hired a horse to a traveling photographer
named N.D. SICKLES. The horse was a worn out animal worth about $50.
SICKLES was to take a trip of a few weeks duration through the San
Joaquin when he reached Sacramento, he wrote concerning the horse and
wanted to know what FAY would take for the rig. FAY wanted $150, which
sum SICKLES regarded as exorbitant FAY swore out a warrant for his
arrest. Under-Sheriff BALDWIN went to Sacramento and returned with
SICKLES and the horse Mr. BALDWIN states that SICKLES was greatly
chagrined over his arrest, declaring it to be a case of using a criminal
process to collect a debt. After long discussion FAY dropped the charges
and SICKLES agreed not to sue him. SICKLES was released and left for
Sacramento he is a well-appearing young man, just starting out in
business, and as the news of his arrest was telegraphed all over the
State, the affair will probably cause him a great deal of trouble. (Long
