The Hollister Free Lance
17 May 1889
**********************

***An Error***
In a recent issue the ‘Free Lance,’ in speaking of the nuptials of Mr.
O’CONNOR and Miss NIGGLE, spoke of the bride as being a daughter of Mr.
John NIGGLE, of San Felipe. It should have been said that she was the
daughter of Mr. George NIGGLE.

Married -- in Hollister, May 13, 1889, by Rev. B. SMYTH, Manuel FERREIRA
de AZEVEDO and Julia GARCIA.

Married -- at Hollister, May 9, 1889, Wm. A. BUSTARD and Mary GAILHARDO.

***Edmund NASON -- An Eastern Paper Commemorates His Death --
The following extract from the Lowell, Mass. ‘Morning Mail,’ this speaks
of Mr. Edmund NASON, recently deceased:
"The deceased was a native of Eaton, Carroll county, N.H., where he
was born in 1825. He came to Lowell when a young man and resided here for
some time. About 30 years ago he went to California and eventually
located in San Felipe, Santa Clara county, and in that place was still
residing his wife and an interesting family. About one year ago, at the
request of his sister, who was in failing health, he came back to Lowell,
not expecting to remain long; but her illness continuing, he could not
think of leaving her, and remained during the winter. Some months ago, he
slipped and fell in the street, receiving injuries which confined him to
the house for several weeks; finally he recovered, but did not consider
himself in good health. He was able to be about, however, and on the
evening of the 21st of April attended an Easter concert in the Shattuck
Street Church where he has been a constant attendant since coming back to
our city. His last illness was very brief, and the announcement of his
death in the daily papers of the 1st inst. was a surprise to most of his
friends.
On coming to Lowell Mr. NASON found, after considerable searching, a
number of his former acquaintances, but not many were left. He readily
made new friends, who found him a sincere, genial and companionable man,
and his death is sincerely lamented both by his old and new
acquaintances. Besides his sister he found several other relatives, and
all endeavored to make his temporary home among us a pleasant one. The
sister, whose illness brought him here, is very feeble, and the sudden
death of her brother cannot but have an unfavorable effect upon her. She
is now the last survivor of their father’s family." [Miss NASON died 4
days after the funeral of her brother. -- Ed.]

***An Illegal Election***
**John PATTERSON and M.T. DOOLING Disqualified to Serve**
At the last meeting of the Board of Town Trustees, Mr. John PATTERSON was
elected Town Clerk to succeed Mr. J.H. SHAW. The latter, however, who has
held this position since the departure of Mr. Fred BLACK, refuses to
relinquish his books to Mr. PATTERSON, who has been duly qualified to
serve, on the ground that Mr. PATTERSON is not legally entitled to the
office, he being a non-resident of the town -- SHAW cited Section 4 of
the Act of Town Incorporation. This rule has not been duly observed in
the past and there are many officers who have been serving illegally,
including, but not limited to, M.T. DOOLING and Frank NOBLE…The Board
will meet in a few days and decide what action to take. (Full story, p.
