**Commendable -- A few days ago some of our young boys appeared at the
Court House with ears pricked up ready to catch the recital of evidence
necessary to convict parties indicted by the Grand Jury for keeping
houses of ill fame. Their presence caught the eye of Judge LOVETT, who
very prudently made a motion to direct the Sheriff to clear the court
room of all boys. The reason assigned by LOVETT for this motion was that
he had boys of his own and the developments of such cases then before the
court were not calculated to improve the morals of youth.

**News from San Juan --
Married -- Luis GARDENERI to Miss RAGGIO
Born -- to the wife of A. GREAME, a gal
*****
***Gilroy Correspondence --
Mrs. Dr. Mary WALKER lectured to our citizens on Sunday evening. Her
dress appeared to attract more attention than her lecture. There are many
things in her costume that appeals to the common sense portion of
American women. If they would sometimes think of the immense weight of
clothing they have bearing them down and the small amount of warmth and
comfort they derive from that weight, I think they would devise simpler
and more comfortable garments.
Died -- Mrs. A. PEDLAR
Married -- Thos. HINES to Miss Ellen ROACH

Lecture -- Mrs. Dr. WALKER appeared in pants at Beattys Hall last
Saturday evening. Her address appeared to be appreciated by all present,
excepting 3 gentlemen whom the fair speaker grieved to see leaving the
hall at an untimely moment. She supposed they were preachers. It is a
question with us whether the lady lecturess owes an apology to the
professional clergymen of the town or to the 3 gentlemen for making such
a mistake in their calling. Mrs. WALKER lectured on "Love & Marriage,"
and in favor of reform in womans dress. She desires the women to have
the privilege of courting the men and popping the all-important
matrimonial question to moral and modest young men; she also wants them
to discard petticoats and wear pantaloons like herself. Her views run
against the customs of the time, but the world is developing strange
freaks of progress, and may yet adopt changes now ridiculed because of
their novelty, and opposition to old time habits.
Burglary -- On the night of the ball [Firemans], ROCKWOODs gun shop was
burglariously entered and 5 silver-mounted pocket pistols and some
ammunition were secured as booty by the thieves. The pistols were valued
at $10 each.
The Trustees of the San Juan Public School have engaged the services of
Miss Addie MOULTIE, of Gilroy, as teacher. In doing so they have
displayed excellent judgment; Miss MOULTIE is in possession of more than
ordinary accomplishments.
Accident -- A son of Mr. HOWELL, living on Mr. WAGNERs ranch, was out on
Tuesday last amusing himself leaping ditches. His exercise was brought to
a painful end by a fall resulting in the breaking of his leg near the
ankle. He is now under Dr. HOWARDs care and doing well.
The surface of the soil has been favored with refreshing showers of rain
during the week. The grain fields look green and promising. On Mr.
POMEROYs ranch in Santa Ana valley, the barley stands knee high.
A Fisticuff -- "Sunny" THOMPSON and Bill PATTERSON went for each others
scalps on the evening upon which the firemen met to dance and make merry
over Washingtons birthday. "Sunny" THOMPSON was badly eclipsed. The
shades of Bill PATTERSON encompassed him and left a dark cloudy pall over
each of his sunny reflectors. A bad way, boys, to honor the birthday of
the father of your country.
Run Over -- A very serious accident occurred at Paicines on Friday of
last week, which came near resulting in the death of Pete BRETON, a man
who until lately, held the position of hostler at Jo SOWLEs livery
stables, Hollister. VARCOEs 4 horse brewery team, homeward bound from
New Idria, had halted at the Paicines saloon and VANHORN, the driver, was
inside collecting empty beer kegs, when the horses suddenly started to
run. Pete BRETON, who was out sunning himself, having just recovered from
a spell of sickness, rushed forward to arrest their progress, grasped the
bridle of the nigh wheeler and as the horse set back, the breast strap
snapped apart. She then plunged forward, reared up on her fore feet, and
then fell, throwing BRETON under the fore wheel of the wagon, which
passed over his shoulder. The other 3 horses dragged the fallen horse
about 200 yards, when VANHORN succeeded in stopping them. BRETON was
unconscious when picked up and Dr. CREPIN was sent for. On examination it
was found that the collar bone of the unfortunate man was broken and
badly bruised in several places, but strong hopes are entertained of his
recovery.
We had the pleasure of meeting friend SCHLESINGER, of the San Benito
store a few days ago. He was en route to San Francisco and halting on his
way for a change of train at the Gilroy depot. He directed our attention
to a caged California lion in one of the cars, which was captured in
Bitter Water Valley. For the past few weeks, this king of the forest has
been the special pet of Wiley WILLIAMS, the host of the San Benito Hotel,
but Wiley, seeing no signs of a millennial change in the brutes nature,
shipped him in the care of SCHLESINGER, to Woodwards Gardens.
Temperance Lecture -- A lecture on temperance was delivered at Union
church on Thursday evening by Mr. Jabez WALKER, an English gentleman, who
holds the honorable position of Grand Worthy Chief Templar of the State
of California Mr. WALKER is a plain bunt independent speaker and we judge
from his vigorous emphatic style that he is a no compromise man [full
