TAPS SOUND FOR

-------
CIVIL WAR VETRAN ANSWERS
LAST CALL

-------
Marched With Sherman to the Sea and
Was Past Commander of State G. A.
R. --Was Active in Patriotic and Civic
Matters.

------------

John Lewis CROW, veteran of the civil
war, past state commander of the G. A. R.
for many years and official of General
Ransom Post of Hillsboro, active in all
patriotic and civic movements in Hillsboro
durning a long residence, died at the
Jones hospital in Hillsboro at *:45 Monday
morning.
Until within the past year, despite
advanced years Mr. CROW was remark-
ably active. Of rugged physique in ap-
pearance his age was much less than it
really was and he entered into the affairs
of life with a remarkable zest.
During the summer of 1926 he attended
the national state encampment at Des
Moines, Iowa, and a great regret on his
part was that he was unable to attend
the encampment of 1927. Mr. CROW was
widely known throughout the state not
only as G. A. R. state commander, but
also for membership in the G. A. R.
drum crops [I assume this was maent to be corps]
which has been a prominent
figure in past years at many gatherings.
Several months ago Mr. CROW sustained
a stroke which confined him to
the hospital for many weeks, but gradually
improved in health and has been
able to walk about the streets. Since
then he has spent a part of the time
in Hillsboro and a part with a daughter
in Portland. He recently returned to
the hospital and gradually became
worse.
During the civil war Mr. CROW served
with the 25th Wisconsin Volunteers and
was at Vicksburg and with Sherman
in his march to the sea. He was born
January 9, 1847, in Grant county, Wisl,
and came to Oregon 21 years ago from
Iowa. Mrs CROW died May 29, 1926, and
surviving immediate relatives are a son
and two daughters: Vernon CROW of
Hood River, Mrs. Mary E. GILL of Merrill,
Iowa, and Mrs. Alice J. McGivern
of Portland.
The funeral was held Wednesday
afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Baptist
church with interment in the Masonic
cemetery. The Masonic rutual was given
at the grave.
