Born -- BEECROFT -- in Hollister, Mar. 7, to the wife of Henry BEECROFT,
a son.

Born -- WALDAMOR -- at Santa Ana, Mar. 5, to the wife of Henry WALDAMOR,
twin girls.

Married -- ASHCRAFT-VINCENT -- on the high seas of the Pacific Ocean, off
the coast of Monterey, Mar. 30, Henry ASHCRAFT and Carrie VINCENT, both
of Hollister.

Died -- CRAW -- at Portland, Oregon, Mar. 30, Emma CRAW, a native of
Iowa, aged 38 years. [Deceased was the sister of Wm., Frank and George
NOBLE…lived here for a long time. She leaves a husband and 6 small
children. The cause of death was consumption.]

Laid to Rest -- An imposing cortege accompanied the remains of Hon. P.B.
TULLY to the cemetery last Friday…pallbearers: S.T. MOORE, H.L. McDUFFEE,
W.W. PETIT, N.C. BRIGGS, Frank CUMMING, C.G. CARGILL and R.G. NORTON…

**9 Apr issue --
Born -- MOORE -- in the San Juan Valley, Apr. 5, to the wife of George
MOORE, a son.

Born -- MYLAR -- at San Juan, Apr. 6, to the wife of Fred MYLAR, a son.

Died -- MENDOZA -- at Panoche, Apr. 2, Jose F. MENDOZA, a native of
Portugal, aged about 36 years.

Died -- FOOTE -- at Lockford, San Joaquin County, Apr. 6, Dr. E.N. FOOTE,
a native of New York, aged 78 years, 3 months, 3 days. […father of County
Clerk G.M. FOOTE, was one of the pioneers of the State, having come here
in 1850...having settled at Lockford some 30 years ago…He leaves a widow
and 4 children. The funeral took place yesterday.]

**16 Apr issue --
Born -- PALMTAG -- in Redlands, Apr. 7, to the wife of Mr. Geo. PALMTAG,
a son.

Died -- STICE -- near Paicines, Apr. 13, Silas Newton STICE, a native of
California, aged 29 years. […stepson of E.B. HOOVER, had been ailing for
some time and on Tuesday morning was found by his mother…unconscious in
the kitchen of Mr. HOOVER’s residence. It appears that deceased was taken
with an epileptic fit and fell from the chair…striking his head violently
against an adjoining part…]

Died -- DAVEGGIO -- in San Jose, Apr. 7, Josephine R. DAVEGGIO, daughter
of Mrs. R. DAVEGGIO, aged 16 years, 5 mos., 20 days.

Died -- HALEY -- in Hollister, Apr. 13, Mrs. Mary HALEY, wife of John
HALEY, native of County Clare, Ireland, aged 64 years.

Died -- VAN SCHAICK -- at Gilroy, Apr. 12, Mrs. Mary VAN SCHAICK, a
native of Alabama, aged about 52 years. […daughter of Capt. & Mrs. E.P.
WRIGHT, of Tres Pinos, and sister of Mrs. N.T. JENSEN. The funeral, which
took place last Wednesday, was conducted by Unity Rebekah Degree Lodge…]

Mrs. A. YOUNG, nee Emma MONTGOMERY, formerly of this place, died recently
at Seattle, Wash., of consumption…taught school for several years in this
section.

**23 Apr issue --
Born -- WICKER -- at San Juan, Apr. 17, to the wife of Robt. WICKER, a
daughter.

Born -- PATTON -- near Hollister, Apr. 13, to the wife of Ridgely PATTON,
a son.

Born -- ROBERTSON -- at Fairview, Apr. 18, to the wife of Mr. ROBERTSON,
a daughter.

Married -- SCOTT-STONE -- at the parsonage of the M.E. Church, Hollister,
Apr. 18, by Rev. Mr. WOODWARD; W.G. SCOTT to Norma STONE. […The happy
couple are spending the honeymoon at Santa Cruz this week.]

Died -- WATSON -- near Paicines, Apr. 21, Mrs. Phoebe WATSON, native of
Missouri, aged 87 years. [Deceased was the mother of D.J., Stephen, James
and Jacob WATSON, of this county; Chas. & John WATSON, of Lompoc, Cal.;
Mrs. R.B. HARRIS, of Downey, Cal.; Mrs. CUTTING, of Redlands; Mrs. W.
MANKINS, Mrs. Sam MANKINS and Mrs. COLE, of this county. She came to
California, across the plains, in 1849, and settled in this county in
1850...member of the Baptist Church. She was buried at Paicines yesterday
afternoon.]

A Dastardly Murder -- Intelligence was received here last Sunday evening
of a horrible murder committed in Cleveland District, on Thursday night,
the mutilated remains of Bernardino ASSEURO, a Mexican, about 70 years of
age, being found in the ruins of his cabin, which had been burned to the
ground…[very long story of land dispute & murder]…[also death of Joseph
PICANCO of valvular lesion of the heart, while being held in jail on
suspicion of the murder…in PICANCO’s statement: “Am 47 years of age;
lived 27 years in America; 5 years in California; native of Azores
Islands…] [from 30 Apr issue -- “the Watsonville ‘Transcript’ of last
Friday says: …will be buried tomorrow at 11 o’clock. The funeral will
take place from the residence of his brother, Manuel PICANCO, in Green
Valley. Deceased leaves a wife, a boy 15 years of age and a girl about
13...”]

Married -- CORROTTO-STURLA -- at the Catholic Church, Gilroy, Apr. 25, by
Rev. Father HUDSON; J.A. CORROTTO to Miss Kate STURLA. [The groom is the
son of Mr. A. CORROTTO of this county…]

Died -- POINSETT -- at Pacheco, Apr. 23, George POINSETT, a native of New
Jersey, aged 69 years. […an old resident of this county, having lived
here for some 25 years…]

**7 May issue --
Died -- DONOVAN -- at Toledo, Canada, Apr. 21, Patrick DONOVAN, a native
of Ireland, aged 92 years. […father of Messrs. Thos. & Patrick DONOVAN,
of this place, came to Canada at the age of 5 years and lived in or near
Toledo all his life…]

Died -- CUSTER -- in Hollister, May 4, Jacob CUSTER, aged 29 years, a
native of Switzerland.

**14 May issue --
Born -- GARRATT -- at Santa Anita, May 7, to the wife of J. GARRAT
[spelled 2 ways], a son.

Born -- MUDER -- at Tres Pinos, May 2, to the wife of Frank MUDER, a
daughter.

Divorce of Mrs. Mary E. McCARTHY against D.M. McCarthy …McCARTHY was
habitually intemperate and was also guilty of infidelity. A decree of
divorce was granted…

**21 May issue --
Died -- HERBERT -- near Hollister, May 14, James HERBERT, a native of
Ireland, aged 60 years. [Deceased was an old resident of this section
having lived here since 1870. He settled in Canada in 1841 and moved to
California in 1863...The cause of his death was consumption….He leaves a
widow & 2 children, a son & daughter. The funeral took place from the
Catholic Church last Sunday morning…]

Died -- CALDWELL -- in Hollister, May 18, Thomas J. CALDWELL, a native of
California, aged 28 years, 10 mos., 22 days. […served an apprenticeship
in the San Benito ‘Advance’ office…went to San Francisco for a number of
years…About a year ago he was attacked by a serious liver complaint,
caused by malaria in his system…which finally carried him off. The
funeral took place last Wednesday afternoon from the South M.E. Church…]

Died -- BELARDEZ -- at Tres Pinos, May 14, Lena, daughter of Mrs. Carrie
BELARDEZ and granddaughter of Mrs. HERRERA, a native of California, aged
8 years.

>From Visalia ‘Delta’ -- Mrs. Sarah EVANS, wife of ex-County Recorder
EVANS, died Monday evening. Her death was due to consumption She left a
bereaved husband and a granddaughter, Ethel FEWEL, to mourn her loss. She
was the aunt of J.W. & W.G. FEWEL and sister of Judge PREWITT, of Placer
county.

**28 May issue --
Born -- CALIN -- in Hollister, May 4, to the wife of Vincent CALIN, a
son.

Died -- McMAHON -- in San Jose, May 22, Mrs. Margaret A. McMAHON, relict
of the late James McMAHON and mother of Miss E. McMAHON, of San Jose,
Mrs. James F. BREEN and Mrs. George WAPPLE, of Hollister, Thos. McMAHON
and Mrs. Isabelle M. BONNELL, of San Francisco; a native of New York,
aged 73 years.

Johnnie FELIX, son of Mrs. FAY, formerly of the McMahon House, was
married at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on May 6th, to Miss Bertha Ruth STAHL, a
belle of that city.

daughter.

H.E. MINOR to Kate A. SALLY. […daughter of Mr.&Mrs. A. SALLY, was raised
in Hollister…Mr. MINOR is the son of Mr.&Mrs. W.W. MINOR, of this place…]

Died -- MOORE -- at Hollister, May 29, infant daughter of Mr.&Mrs. S.E.
MOORE.

Died -- MAZE -- at Hollister, May 27, Mrs. Mary MAZE, a native of
California, aged 20 years.

Died -- SOTO -- at San Juan, May 30, Christina, daughter of Mr.&Mrs.
Benino SOTO. [San Juan -- The grim destroyer has again entered the home
of Mr.&Mrs. Benito [spelled 2 ways] SOTO on Fourth street. This time the
victim was their little daughter Christina, whose death occurred Sunday
morning. The fact that she had been very sick for some time did not
lessen the blow for her parents and remaining brothers and sisters, with
whom every one sympathizes.]

Died -- THOMAS -- in San Francisco, May 26, Minnie May MULLEN-THOMAS,
beloved wife of Arthur THOMAS, a native of Gilroy, aged 22 years, 10
months, 5 days. […sister of Mrs. C.R. AUSTIN, of this place.]

Died -- ORR -- at Prince Edwards Island, May 29, Mrs. John ORR, aged 63
years. […mother of Mr. John C. ORR, of San Felipe and Miss Agnes ORR, of
Prince Edwards Island.]

years.

J.P.; Fernando A. SMITH to Carmen M. LAUTERIO, both of San Francisco.

Died -- HENDRICKS -- at Hollister, June 20, J.D. HENDRICKS, aged 47
years, 8 months, 14 days. […settled here many years ago as a
dentist…About a year or so ago, he contracted a severe case of la grippe
which speedily turned into consumption… devoted adherent of the Christian
Church…The funeral took place last Tuesday afternoon…]
