**EDISON Outdoing Himself -- from the N.Y. Sun --
Telescopophone is the name of Mr. EDISONs latest invention. It is
simply a marvelous ear trumphet upon the construction of which Mr. EDISON
has been working for several months. Mr. EDISONs attention was attracted
to the subject of his own deafness. He is enabled to hear only when the
speaker enunciates in a loud tone. Mr. EDISON is loath to describe the
telescopophone except generally, as it is not completed, and is to be
patented. The implement is about 5 ½ feet long, and has an internal
arrangement by which sound is concentrated and made louder. A sound which
to the unaided ear is inaudible, becomes distinct by the use of the
telescopophone Now, Mr. EDISON, what next? Oh, said Mr. EDISON, with
one of those hearty bursts of laughter that he so often indulges in,
Ive not got to the end yet.
Sam HARRIS, of San Juan, was in town Saturday.
Mr. GLEASON, of Tres Pinos, gave us a call this week.
Miss Annie LAW is recreating at Watsonville at present.
Mrs. COOPER, Judge MAYs daughter, is visiting in Hollister.
Mr. T.H. SWAIN, who has been absent for some time, is again at home.
Mr. J.S. CARTERs 2 daughters are now visiting with Mr. LITTLEs family
at the McMahon House.
Mr.&Mrs. Hugh MATTHEWS, of Emmet, were in town this week, and paid us
their respects.
Frank ROCHET is kept busy now-a-days repairing guns, sewing machines,
etc. He is an excellent workman.
Mr. James T. GRAY, while working with a wind-mill this week, had the
little finger of the left hand badly mashed -- a painful, but not serious
accident.
Mr. S.J. MARTIN has been employed to teach the Fair View school. Mr.
MARTIN, although a young man, has acquired an excellent reputation as a
teacher.
The school election held at Emmet on the 29th ult., resulted in the
choice of Mr. Terrence MURPHY for Trustee.
Wilse CHAPPELL and W.A. BELL, accompanied by a Telegraph reporter, are
now scouring the hills and dales in the neighborhood of THEOPHILEs
vineyard, in search of deer.
The potato race at the rink last Saturday evening, was a very laughable
affair. The chaps contesting for the prize did some lofty tumbling.
Master Lon CODY won the stakes.
Miss PHELPS, daughter of Santa Clara countys popular Assessor, spent a
week or twos visit among relatives and friends in this vicinity,
returning home last week.
Miss Clara EDWARDS, of San Juan, we understand, has been engaged to teach
the Emmet school. Miss E. is no stranger to the school room, and we
venture to say she will give good satisfaction.
Charley SAIRS, with an eye to business, has established an ice-lemonade
stand at the skating rink, to accommodate the thirsty who frequent that
place of amusement and exercise. On Saturday nights he will throw in ice
cream.
The Advance says, speaking of Mr. J.E. RUST: During his absence he
submitted to a very painful operation, having had a large tumor removed
from his hind leg. Just where that limb is located, the public are at a
loss to know.
Mr. J.C. HAYES, of the New York Bakery, San Francisco, came down Tuesday
to remain a few days.
A postal card received at this place this week, from the head waters of
the San Benito, announce the fact that Cyrus LATHROP had killed a 200
pound deer

The Board of School Trustees met at H. FALKINBURGs store on Tuesday last
and selected the following teachers for the ensuing term:
Principal -- Samuel T. BLACK
1st Assistant -- N.B. COFFMAN
2nd Assistant -- Miss Mary SALLY
3rd Assistant -- Mrs. L. BOOTH
Primary dept. -- Mrs. M.P. MEGENITY
Geo. CHALMERS, of San Juan, lost his residence by fire on the 5th inst.
The fire originated in the upper story of the building, and before
assistance could be procured, the entire structure was burned to the
ground. Much of the furniture and contents of the building were also
destroyed. Loss, about $2,000.
The rust is doing greater damage to the wheat crop of this valley than
most people are wont to believe. The late sown in some localities is
entirely ruined. The 20 or 30 acre field belonging to Mr. J.I. HODGES,
just west of town, is an entire failure, if observations made along the
outskirts is any criterion. The adobe lands give better promise of crops.
Bill DUFFY, we are told, skipped from town very early the other
morning. Cause -- crookedness in the financial affairs of the saloon in
which he was interested.
Fred ESTRADA, of San Francisco, paid Hollister a flying visit on Tuesday
last. He was full of business, having but little time to remain among us.
Pioneer Paint Shop -- Having made painting a life long profession, I
desire to inform the public that I will execute with neatness and
dispatch all work entrusted to me. House, sign and carriage painting,
paper hanging, glazing, kalsoming, etc., done in a workmanlike manner and
at the very lowest prices. Parties having jobs of considerable size will
save money by learning my terms. Shop on corner of Monterey and Third
streets. Wm. BINGHAM
