****************
Born -- in Hollister, Aug. 19, to the wife of R.H. BROTHERTON, a son.
[Bob says he didnt weigh the chap, but he is a big, fat fellow.]
Grandma HORN, mother to Messrs. G.M. & I. HORN, and Mrs. I.M. LEWIS, died
last Friday at the residence of Mr. I.M. LEWIS, on Bird Creek, a few
miles south of Hollister. Her death was not unexpected, the old lady
having been very feeble for many months.
Mrs. W.W. ENGLAND, who has been seriously ill for some time past, is
slowly recovering.
Mr. Sam HARRIS, of San Juan, came over on business last Saturday. He paid
us a short visit.
Victor CANET has removed his wine saloon from Fourth street to San Benito
street, between Third & Fourth.
Sheriff BROWN returned last Sunday from San Quentin with Juan FELIX, of
black horse notoriety. Juan seemed to be glad of the chance to doff his
striped suit and return to Hollister.
Mrs. J.A. REED sold her wheat last week to Mr. C.C. LITTLE, agent of J.S.
CARTER & Co., at this place, for $1.60 per cental. This was quite in
advance of the ruling price, the grain being of an excellent quality.
Last Thursday while Geo. PULLEN, of San Juan, was out in the field after
a load of grain, the horses became detached from the wagon, jerking the
driver to the ground. Fortunately he escaped injury, other than a few
slight bruises.
Our good friend, Steve KENNEDY, accompanied by his younger daughter,
passed through Hollister last Monday on their way to Gilroy. We
acknowledge a friendly call. Steve says he can find no clue to the
whereabouts of the sheep stealer.
Mr. N.A. HAWKINS took his departure for Albany, N.Y., last Monday, where
he will attend a law school for the next 9 months or a year
We are pleased to note the fact that Judge Wm. E. LOVETT, lately of this
place, has been appointed Deputy United States Attorney for California.
The Judge was the temperance candidate for Governor at the last general
election, and possesses a national as well as State reputation.
Hugh MATTHEWS and Uncle G.W. CALL spent a day or so in town this week.
Hugh says he has corn growing 9 feet high, alfalfa that a yearling calf
could hide in, tomatoes that weigh 1 ½ pounds each, and watermelons 30
inches in length. Surely Hugh must be a happy man this year.
Mr. S.B. HOOVER, of Santa Ana, has leased the Oak Grove place belonging
to Luis ARQUES, near Tres Pinos, and will remove thither within a few
weeks. The ranch contains 400ac of land. He proposes also to keep an
eating house and feed yard for the accommodation of man and beast
>From Sam HARRIS we have been able to learn the following particulars
concerning the attempted suicide near San Juan last Thursday morning, by
William PRESCOTT, an old resident of that part of the county. Early on
the morning stated, Mr. PRESCOTT arose for the purpose of taking the
train for San Jose. While his wife and son were assisting in the
preparation for his departure, a shot was heard in the bed room; the
young man immediately rushed into the room, only to find his father
sitting on a trunk, bleeding profusely from a wound inflicted in the chin
from a Sharps rifle. It would appear from the nature of the wound that
the unfortunate man sought to take his own life by shooting himself
through the neck or head. The ball entered under the chin, passing
upward, completely severing the lower jaw, and knocking out several front
teeth of the upper. While the rash act took the community by surprise,
those more intimately acquainted have noticed in him recently a condition
of mind not altogether compos mentis The real cause of the unhappy affair
is not known, although financial reverses are attributed to it. At last
accounts the sufferer was lying in a critical condition, with chances
against his recovery. Dr. CARGILL is attending the wounded man, and is
doing all that is possible to alleviate his sufferings.
Al. LEONARD has bought out the stage line between this place and Picacho,
and will hereafter make 2 trips a week, leaving here on Tuesdays and
Fridays. Mr. John JUSTICE will handle the ribbons, insuring to passengers
a safe drive over this road
