Born -- HARLAN -- at Hollister, Sept. 29, to the wife of U.G. HARLAN, a
daughter.

Born -- McALEER -- in the San Juan Valley, Sept. 30, to the wife of Jos.
McALEER, a daughter.

Born -- RENZ -- in Hollister, Oct. 4, to the wife of G.A. RENZ, a son.

Born -- ANGOT -- at San Felipe, Sept. 30, to the wife of P. ANGOT, a
daughter.

Married -- LEE-JONES -- in Salinas City, Oct. 2, by Justice of the Peace
G.W. ROADHOUSE; John F. LEE, of Salinas, and Miss Lottie JONES, of Emmet,

Married -- NUTTING-PREWETT -- at Fresno, Sept. 29, by Rev. Mr. MARTIN;
Ralph NUTTING to Miss Lizzie PREWETT. [The wedding…was originally set for
last Monday, at this place [Hollister], but at the earnest request of the
groom’s employers, Messrs. DONAHOE, EMMONS & Co., the leading hardware
establishment of Fresno county, the ceremony took place at Fresno, as Mr.
NUTTING, who is foreman of the plumbing dept…could not get a leave of
absence, owing to an unexpected rush or work. Accordingly, the bride,
accompanied by her father, Mr. John T. PREWETT, went over to Fresno…at
the Christian Church parsonage…The groom is the son of Mr. J.J. NUTTING…]

Died -- DUTRA -- in Hollister, Oct. 3, infant son of Mr.&Mrs. S. DUTRA.

Died -- HUNTER -- in Hollister, Oct. 4, infant child of Mr.&Mrs. J.H.
HUNTER.

**14 Oct issue --
Married -- OGDEN-ORR -- at Hollister, Oct. 5, by the Rev. W.P. ANDREWS;
Jas. G. OGDEN, of Marysville, to Miss Florence P. ORR, of San Felipe.
[…daughter of Mr. Jas. ORR, of Pacheco…]

Died -- MANKINS -- at Susanville, Lassen Co., Sept. 30, Samuel MANKINS, a
native of Kentucky, aged 64 years.

Died -- GIRALDO -- in San Juan, Oct. 11, Mrs. Vincent GIRALDO, a native
of California, aged 28 years.

Some time since, word was received that John W. SLAVEN, Jr., son of Dr.
SLAVEN, of New York, and nephew of Thos. SLAVEN, of Mulberry, was wounded
at El Caney, Cuba, July 1st and died the following day. He was physically
a splendid specimen of mankind.

A marriage license was issued Monday to Silvester TIRADO and Miss Ysabel
GUSMAN, both of New Idria.

San Juan Items -- Mr. Chas MURPHY, a former resident of San Juan, was
married at Corralitos recently to a Miss McCUNE…

**21 Oct issue --
Married -- KROESEN-DUNHAM -- at the residence of the bride’s parents,
Gilroy, Oct. 12th, by the Rev. R.N. DAVIS; Clyde Bertend KROESEN to Miss
Helen DUNHAM.

Died -- NASH -- in Hollister, Oct. 18, V.B. NASH, a native of Columbia,
Maine, aged 64 years, 7 months, 14 days. [Deceased was born in Columbia,
Washington county, Maine, March 3, 1834. His father, Jesse Lee NASH, was
a lumberman and ship-builder, and of the 4 sons & 2 daughters born to
him, deceased was the youngest. Upon coming to California in 1863, via
the Isthmus of Panama, deceased proceeded to the mines where he spent 6
months. He then went to Astoria, Oregon and spent a year in the pine
lumbering mills of that place, from with section he went to Redwood
City…He married Miss Abbie W. DORMAN, of Addison, Washington county,
Maine, in 1865, and with his wife settled near Hollister in 1869. Six
children were born to this union, viz: Warren G. NASH, the prominent San
Jose contractor; Mrs. Jas. A. CUSHMAN; Edward L., now in the Klondike;
Wilbur D.; Lizzie and Lavonia…For a long time past he has been an intense
sufferer from dropsy…The funeral took place last Wednesday afternoon from
the family residence…]

**28 Oct issue --
Born -- NUTTING -- in Hollister, Oct. 26, to the wife of J.J. NUTTING, a
daughter.

Married -- NEWKIRK-GANN -- in Hollister, Oct. 22, by Rev. C. MOORE; I.N.
NEWKIRK and Miss Hettie E. GANN.

Died -- HARLEY -- at Anderson Springs, Oct. 21, George HARLEY, a native
of San Francisco, aged 35 years, 5 mos. [Mr. HARLEY was the head of the
well-known firm, the Chas HARLEY Co., with headquarters at New York. He
has been a sufferer for years from chronic liver complaint and had sought
all the relief that wealth and loving care could command. Arriving in San
Francisco he was recommended to the San Benito Springs as a chance for
prolonging his life a few days. At the time of his arrival he was past
all hope…

Died -- NUNES -- in Comstock, Oct. 23, Rosa NUNES, aged 3 months.

Pardo LUCERO died at the Monterey county Hospital, last Monday at the age
of 125 years. This great age is authenticated by the Soledad Mission
records, Supervisor WIDEMAN and others, of Monterey county. He was known
as Parda [spelled 2 ways] LUCERO, El Vaquero. His old friend, Parito, age
102, is at the Hospital.

The wedding of Miss Nonie LAHIFF and Frank MURPHY, of Watsonville, was a
quiet one. The bride was attended by Miss Amy BREEN, of Hollister, and
Miss Kitty MURPHY, of San Francisco. Messrs. BAXTER and QUINN, of
Watsonville, acted as groomsmen. Gracie and Sister McCARTHY were flower
girls. The ceremony was performed by Father RAGGIO, of Santa Clara. Mr.
AVERY, of San Jose, sang a solo in excellent voice…After the ceremony a
wedding breakfast was partaken of at the residence of Mrs. McCARTHY.
After their bridal tour, Mr.&Mrs. MURPHY will reside in Watsonville.

**4 Nov issue --
Born -- HITCHCOCK -- in Hollister, Oct. 28, to the wife of F.N.
HITCHCOCK, a son.

Married -- HAWKINS-MAULDIN -- on Oct. 27th, at the residence of Mr.&Mrs.
T.H. BURLAND, Salinas, by Rev. E.B. HATCH; William T. HAWKINS, of
Hollister, and Miss Lizzie MAULDIN, of Salinas. […The bride is a daughter
of W.P. MAULDIN, of Salinas…The groom is a prosperous young farmer of
this locality and the son of Mr. J.F. HAWKINS, one of our wealthiest
citizens…]

Married -- MATTOS-VILLA -- at San Benito, Oct. 13, by Judge MEYER; Manuel
F. MATTOS and Pilar VILLA.

Married -- CALKINS-HERMAN -- at Hollister, Nov. 9, by Rev. C.P. MORESE;
Chas. M. CALKINS, of Hollister, to Miss Emma K. HERMAN, of Burlington,
Iowa.

Died -- ROWE -- in Hollister, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, Ethel, infant daughter
of Mr.&Mrs. C.O. ROWE, of Mulberry.

Married -- BURNS-MELENDY -- at the residence of the bride’s parents,
Mr.&Mrs. H. MELENDY, Bear Valley, Nov. 15, by Rev. Mr. MORSE; Wm. Lee

Married -- RYAN-SCHAFER -- at Gilroy, Nov. 15, by Rev. Fr. HUDSON;
Richard M. RYAN to Miss Kate SCHAFER. [The groom is Gilroy’s popular
postmaster and the bride is the daughter of Mr.&Mrs. Henry SCHAFER, of
Gilroy…]

Mr.&Mrs. BOWMAN, of San Juan, celebrated their golden wedding last
Wednesday night. The estimable couple were married at East Waterville,
Maine, 50 years ago…For 30 years Mr.&Mrs. BOWMAN have resided at San
Juan…

Married -- BONNEL-BRIGGS -- at Hollister, Nov. 23, by Rev. J.R.N. BELL;
Dr. F.C. BONNEL to Miss Edna Belle BRIGGS. [long story -- …Miss Lillian
REA of Gilroy as bridesmaid, escorted by Mr. N.C. BRIGGS, Jr., as best
man, led the way to the altar…]

Married -- SHORE-HICKEY -- at the residence of the bride’s parents,
Hollister, Nov. 30, by the Rev. J.R.N. BELL; Fred L. SHORE to Miss Annie
HICKEY. [The groom is a well-known and popular resident of Pacheco and
the charming bride is the daughter of Mr.&Mrs. C. HICKEY, of this place…]

Married -- ST. JOHN-WATERS -- at the residence of O.O. FELKNER, San Jose,
Nov. 26, Chas. O. ST. JOHN, of the State of Washington, to Mrs. F.O.
WATERS, of Mulberry.

Married -- VAN SICKLE-WILDS -- at the Presbyterian manse, Hollister, Nov.
24, by Rev. J.R.N. BELL; Fred D.G. VAN SICKLE to Miss Josephine WILDS.
[The groom is a…resident of Watsonville and the bride daughter of
Mr.&Mrs. Jos. M. WILDS, of this place…]

Died -- JENKINS -- near Hollister, Nov. 24, Wilson JENKINS, a native of
Illinois, aged 64 years. […had been ailing for a short time from
rheumatism…an old resident of the Fairview district…The funeral took
place last Saturday…]

Died -- MAGGINI -- at San Benito, Nov. 20, Paul MAGGINI, a native of
California, aged 4 years. [In the sudden death of their little boy,
Mr.&Mrs. Serafino MAGGINI suffered a severe affliction. The little fellow
was only sick a couple of days…The funeral which took place at San Benito
was largely attended.]

Died -- SAUNDERS -- at New Idria, Nov. 30, infant son of Mr.&Mrs. B.B.
SAUNDERS, aged 3 months.

**9 Dec issue --
Married -- MOORE-BARKER -- in Redwood City, Dec. 8, Mrs. Fannie MOORE and
Chas. E. BARKER, both of San Jose.

Married -- BROOKS-ORR -- at Hollister, Dec. 7, John Calvin BROOKS to Miss
Ida ORR. [Both parties…are residents of Pacheco…The bride is the daughter
of Mr.&Mrs. Jas. ORR…]

**16 Dec issue --
Married -- ROBINSON-HERNANDEZ -- at Vallecitos, Nov. 26, by S.H.
LANGFORD, J.P.; Justice J. ROBINSON of New Idria, to Charlotte HERNANDEZ,
of Vallecitos.

Died -- GARDELLA -- at San Juan, Dec. 14, Marie GARDELLA, aged 85 years.
[from San Juan Items -- Mrs. GARDELLA, an old resident of this place and
for a long time past an invalid, died last Wednesday.]

San Juan Items -- The wife of Martin LOPES died on the 10th and “Indian
Louie” one of TAIX’s teamsters, died on the 11th.

**23 Dec issue --
Born -- McCUNE -- at Cienega, Dec. 14, to the wife of James McCUNE, a
son.

Born -- RHINEHART -- at Hollister, Dec. 10, to the wife of James
RHINEHART, a son.

Died -- SCOTT -- at St. Helena, Napa county, Dec. 8, Merril, infant son
of Mr.&Mrs. W.J. SCOTT, aged 9 months.

Died -- GONZALES -- at Hollister, Dec. 14, infant daughter of Mr.&Mrs.
Pilar GONZALES.

**30 Dec issue --
Died -- BURNS -- on the Topo Ranch, near Metz, Monterey county, Dec. 21,
Charles BURNS, a native of Missouri, aged 68 years. […In former times he
kept the old Central Hotel at Salinas, after which he moved below
Soledad, and thence to Metz. He was a relative of R.E. SHORE, of Pacheco
and leaves a widow & 4 children, all grown…]

Died -- DE CAMPOS -- at Panoche, Dec. 23, infant child of Mr.&Mrs. M.J.
DeCAMPOS.
