**6 Jan issue --
Born -- LANE -- at Aromas, Dec. 29, 1898, to the wife of U.G. LANE, a
son.
Died -- FALLON -- at El Paso, Texas, Dec. 29, 1898, R.S. FALLON, native
of California, aged 35 years. [ friends shocked to hear of his unexpected
demise, as it was but a few weeks ago that he was here attending his
brothers funeral The remains arrived here from El Paso last Sunday and
were interred in the family plot at the Catholic cemetery At the time of
his death he was doing very well at El Paso in business.]
Died -- PREWITT -- at Hollister, Dec. 29th, 1898, Samuel PREWITT, aged 83
years, 29 days. [Deceased was a native of Kentucky, born in 1815, where
he resided until 1828, at which time he accompanied his parents to
Missouri where he married Miss Nancy STRONG. The issue of this marriage
was 5 children of whom but 2 are living, John T. PREWITT, of this place,
and Mrs. Andrew IRWIN, of Oregon. In 1847 deceased enlisted for the
Mexican War, his wife having died 3 years pervious. He served through the
war with distinction and at its close returned home. In May, 1849, he
started across the plains for California and reached this State in
October of the same year. He first settled at Georgetown, El Dorado
county, where, in company with his brother, he engaged in the merchandise
business. Part of the time he was engaged in mining . emigrated to
Windsor, Sonoma county in 56...remained there until 1871, when in
company with his children, who had joined him in the meantime, he came to
this county, settling in Bear Valley. There he resided until the last 4
years when he moved to Hollister. Death was caused by a second stroke of
paralysis, having experienced the first stroke some 14 years ago The
funeral took place from the ME. Church, South, last Sunday ]
Death of Miss Carrie HAMILTON -- This community was greatly shocked last
Wednesday noon at the sudden and unexpected announcement of the death,
that morning, at Phoenix, Arizona, of Miss Carrie HAMILTON, daughter of
Mr.&Mrs. J.G. HAMILTON, of this place A teacher by profession [she
entered] Stanford University to further perfect herself in her chosen
profession Some time ago she developed a bronchial trouble finally taken
to Arizona The remains will be brought here for burial ] [notice in 13

Died -- McMAHON -- in San Jose, Jan. 7, Ellen A. McMAHON, a native of New
York, eldest daughter of the late Jas. & M.A. McMAHON and sister of Thos.
McMAHON, and Mrs. James F. BREEN, of San Francisco, Mrs. M.C. WAPPLE and
Mrs. J.M. BONNELL, of San Jose.
Died -- ALVARADO -- at Hollister, Jan. 9, Louis ALVARADO, a native of
California, aged 54 years.
Died -- HAMILTON -- at Phoenix, Arizona, Jan. 9, Carrie L., beloved
daughter of Mr.&Mrs. J.G. HAMILTON, a native of California, aged 22
years, 2 months, 3 days. [The remains of the late Miss Carrie HAMILTON
arrived here from Phoenix, Arizona, last Sunday and were interred on
Monday morning, in the IOOF Cemetery The cause of death was, according
to Dr. J.M. SWETNAM, her attending physician at Phoenix, the result of a
rupture of one of the large blood vessels in the chest ]
The late Maria GARDELLA, of San Juan, in her will devised $200 to the
Church of Sansi, Genoa, Italy; $40 to Father CLOSA, San Juan; $20 to
Maria OTTOBONI; $1000 to her niece, Amelia CASSACCIA; $100 to Jules
ROSETTI, of San Jose; rest of her estate is will to her nephew, Angelo
CASSACCIA, of San Juan, and his mother, Antonia CASSACCIA, Genoa, Italy.
Lorenzo LAVAGNINO is named as executor.

Born -- ROBINSON -- at Oakland, Jan. 13, to the wife of F.M. ROBINSON, a
daughter.
Married -- HART-SNYDER -- near Evergreen, Jan. 15, at the residence of
the brides parents, by the Rev. W.A. KENNEDY; Miss Mayme A. SNYDER of
Evergreen to Henry I. HART of Hollister. [from 27 Jan issue -- at the
home of the brides parents, Mr.&Mrs. J. SNYDER ]
Married -- RANDALL-HENDRICKS -- at Berkeley, Jan. 4, U.M. RANDALL of
Ellensburg to Miss Maud HENDRICKS of Berkeley, both formerly of
Hollister.
Died -- BASHFORD -- at Cherry Hill School District, Jan. 13, Martha F.
BASHFORD, native of Maine, aged 51 years. [ died suddenly according to
Mrs. BUTTNER, daughter of deceased, who was alone with her at the time of
her death, that Mrs. BASHFORD had been suffering greatly for a long time
past from the effects of an operation performed on her at a San Francisco
Hospital some time ago taken to Cherry Hill Cemetery and interred.]
Died -- BREEN -- in Oakland, Jan. 13, Eugene T. BREEN, aged 40 years.
[ son of the late E.J. BREEN, of San Juan was interred at San Jose last
Saturday He died at the residence of his wifes mother at Oakland.]
Died -- THOMAS -- at Los Muertos, Jan. 16, Marie THOMAS, beloved sister
of Manuel and Joseph THOMAS, a native of Azores Island, aged 27 years.
[Cottonwood Items -- This community was greatly shocked by the sad news
which reached here last Sunday of the death of Miss Mary THOMAS, who has
been residing with her brother and family at Los Muertos, for the past
few weeks. Miss THOMAS, who was afflicted with consumption, came here
from the East a short time ago ]
Died -- CAMPBELL -- at Hollister, Jan. 17, Robert Winters CAMPBELL,
beloved son of Mr.&Mrs. J.H. CAMPBELL, a native of California, aged 17
years, 3 months, 2 days. [ has been suffering for some time past from
consumption The remains were taken to Salinas, where they were interred
in the IOOF cemetery.]

LEWIS, aged 55 years, 4 months, 19 days.
Died -- KELLY -- at South San Francisco, Edwin H., infant son of Mr.&Mrs.
John KELLY, aged 13 months. [Mrs. H. GOOLD and Miss Ella MORAN, of
Paicines, went to San Francisco last Saturday to attend the funeral ]

Born -- SKOW -- at Hollister, Jan. 29, to the wife of Peter SKOW, twins

Died -- SMITH -- at Merced, Jan. 3, Mrs. A. SMITH, beloved mother of Mrs.
E.H. BROUSE, aged 46 years.
Died -- ROBINSON - at Oakland, Jan. 26, Ella M., beloved wife of F.W.
ROBINSON and daughter of Mr.&Mrs. J.W. DAVIS, of this place, a native of
Augusta, Georgia, aged 35 years, 3 months. [The remains were brought here
last Friday and the funeral took place on Saturday morning Her death was
caused by an attack of quinsy which resulted in blood poisoning. She
leaves, besides her husband, 3 small children, the youngest of whom is
but 10 days old.]
Died -- JONES -- in Walnut Creek, Contra Costa county, Jan. 31,
Nathaniel, husband of Elizabeth JONES, father of Robert M. JONES, Mrs.
Mattie SCHLITZ, of Tulare, Mrs. Elizabeth CAMERON, of Hollister, and J.J.
JONES, and brother of S.W. JONES; a native of Tennessee, aged 79 years,
10 days.
Died -- WRIGHT -- at San Juan, Jan. 30, John R. WRIGHT, a native of
California, aged 36 years.
San Juan Items -- Mr. David WRIGHT, an old resident, died on the 29th,
aged 79 years. The deceased was buried from the Congregational Church,
the funeral being largely attended.
Died -- CLEARY -- at San Francisco, Jan. 30, Mrs. Annie CLEARY, aged 32
years. [Deceased, whose maiden name was Annie KENNEDY formerly taught the
Cienega school from last Tuesdays Examiner -- at her residence, 414
Clement street, of ptomaine poisoning, due to eating an oyster in which
poisonous germs had generated by decay. A week ago Sunday Dr. S.A.
CLEARY, husband of deceased, purchased some oysters at a stand on Larkin
street, near Sacramento. The bivalves were eaten by Mrs. CLEARY, who felt
no ill-effects until Tuesday evening She was about 32 years of age and
left an infant but a month old.]

Born -- CARDIFF -- in Santa Cruz, Jan. 30, to Mr.&Mrs. Robert L. CARDIFF,
a daughter.
Died -- HURD -- at Fruitvale, Feb. 2, Rev. I.N. HURD, native of New York,
aged 77 years.
It was with deep regret that the intelligence of the death of Ralph L.
SHEARER, of the First Washington Regiment, at Manila, was received here
this week. Deceased was the son of J.Q. SHEARER and was well known here

Born -- UNDERWOOD -- in the San Juan valley, Feb. 11, to the wife of
Walter UNDERWOOD, a son.
Born -- MAZE -- at Hollister, Feb. 15, to the wife of Blas MAZE, a
daughter.
Died -- MAIERS -- at Emmet, Feb. 10, Arthur, son of C.H. MAIERS, aged 3
years, 6 months.
Died -- NOLAND -- at Laurel, Santa Cruz county, Feb. 9, Mrs. NOLAND,
mother of Mrs. A. MAS, a native of Ireland, aged 85 years.
Died -- ROBINSON -- in Hollister, Feb. 16, John W. ROBINSON, a native of
Virginia, aged 76 years. [ a pioneer resident of this place; was formerly
Marshal of the Town ]
Marriage licenses were issued out of the County Clerks office this week
to Otis Henry SNIBLEY to wed Mrs. Rose ALDRIDGE, of Emmet; also to Rafael
LIGUORI, of Gilroy, to wed Barbara Maria GASSACCIA, of San Juan.
San Juan Items -- Rafael LIGUORI was married to Miss Amelia CASSACCIA, in
the Old Mission Church, on the 14th, by the Rev. Father CLOSA. Mr.
LIGOURI is the Gilroy butcher, while his wife is the niece of the late
Mrs. GARDELLA, of San Juan.
Heirs Found -- Four heirs to the estate of the late Robert RANGELEY, who
died at San Juan last year, have been found in England. The heirs are
Eliza JENNINGS and Alice STRINGER, daughters of Mrs. Emma JENNINGS (nee
Emma RANGLEY) deceased, now residing at 25 Marshfield Road, Bradford,
Yorkshire; John RANGLEY and Hannah CROSSELY (nee Hannah RANGLEY) now
residing at 46 Lincoln Street, Balm Lane, Wakefield, England had it not
been for Judge PEARCE, of San Juan, who inquired into his antecedents
when RANGLEY was on his deathbed, the estate might have escheated to the
State The value of the estate is unknown but will probably amount to
$3000. It comprises some 10 or 12 acres of land at San Juan; some
personal property and money and it is rumored that deceased owned a
couple of lots in the Richmond District, San Francisco, and had some
money loaned out.

son.
Born -- HAWLEY -- at Oakland, Feb. 21, to the wife of Don HAWLEY, (nee
Blanche HODGES), a daughter.

Died -- Died -- THOMPSON -- at Santa Clara, Feb. 15, Albert THOMPSON, a
native of Michigan, aged 69 years. [ an old-time resident of this county,
and was familiarly known as Sunny THOMPSON He crossed the plains with
an ox-team, arriving at Sacramento in 1850. A couple of years ago he was
stricken with paralysis from which he never recovered.]
Died -- JOHNSON -- at Marysville, Leon Lathrop, son of Walter C. JOHNSON
and wife, a native of Lompoc, Santa Barbara county, aged 2 years, 1
month, 6 days. [from the Marysville Appeal of Feb. 15th -- Mr. JOHNSON
is a recent resident of Marysville, only having moved his family here
about the middle of last month ]
Died -- ROZAS -- at San Juan, Feb. 19, Eugene, beloved son of Mr.&Mrs. A.
ROZAS, a native of California, aged 22 years, 11 months. [San Juan Items
-- His sudden death was a surprise to his many friends, as he had only
been sick a few days. The funeral took place from the Old Mission Church
Tuesday ]

Married -- DINSMORE-SCOTT -- at the residence of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. J.W.
DINSMORE, San Jose, Feb. 22, by Rev. Dr. DINSMORE; Dudley Fitz-John
DINSMORE to Miss Eva Mabel SCOTT, of Hollister. [ The charming bride is
the daughter of Mrs. B.F. SCOTT, of this place and has been a successful
teacher in several of our schools and the groom is a prominent well-to-do
young orchardist of Santa Clara county The bride was attended by Miss Ida
SCOTT and Miss Marguerite DINSMORE, and Messrs, Edgar SCOTT and Wm.
McLAINE acted as groomsmen will make their future residence at the
grooms orchard home on the Mt. Hamilton Road.]

Married -- LIMA-WHITE -- at Hollister, Mar. 9, by Hon. MT. DOOLING,
Superior Judge; Manuel LIMA, of Cleveland, to Miss Nellie WHITE, of
Panoche.
Patrick DALY, one of the victims in the recent deplorable accident at San
Martin, was a well-known and highly respected resident of Gilroy. He came
from New York with his wife in 1868...He leaves a widow and 5 grown
children; Phillip, James, Rose and Ysabel DALY and Mrs. Hoyt WEATHERS, of
San Felipe. His eldest son, Phillip, was absent at the time of the
accident and could not get back in time for the funeral. The funeral at
Gilroy was largely attended

Born -- AUTENREITH -- at Hollister, Mar. 8, to the wife of Jack
AUTENREITH, a daughter.
Born -- GARRETT -- near San Juan, Feb. 24, to the wife of L.N. GARRETT, a
son.
Married -- SMITH-LATTURE -- at Spokane, Wash., Mar. 6, Edward SMITH to
Miss Norma LATTURE. [ The groom will be pleasantly remembered as the
artistic comedian of the Valerga Opera Company, which played here last
summer At present he is stage manager of the Metropolitan Opera Company,
now touring the northwest, and his wife and brother-in-law, John WEEK,
are both prominent members of the company ]

J.P.; Edwin GURR to Stata McKENZIE, both residents of Merced.

native of California, aged 31 years.
Died -- POMEROY -- at Lompoc, Santa Barbara county, Mar. 10, Grove
Olmstead POMEROY, a native of Santa Clara county, aged 33 years, 5 mos.,
18 days.

Born -- WALDEMAR -- in Santa Ana Valley, Mar. 20, to the wife of H.
WALDEMAR, a son.
Died -- ROCHE -- at the County Hospital, Mar. 19, William ROCHE, a native
of Mass., aged 43 years.
Died -- CLARK -- at San Felipe, Mar. 19, David Putnam CLARK, a native of
Vermont, aged 75 years, 3 mos., 2 days. [ He was a descendant of General
PUTNAM, of revolutionary fame. Deceased was born in Stockbridge, Vermont
on Nov. 14, 1823, and on Jan. 28, 1848, married Eliza J. BLOOD, a lady of
excellent family and character, who survives him Shortly after marriage
the young couple took up their residence in North Chelmsford, Mass.,
where they remained for 30 years, leaving there for California, Jan.,
1877...(lots of detail of early life) 3 years ago the family came to San
Benito county and located at San Felipe ] [from the Newman, Cal. West

have all long since joined the silent majority, the youngest daughter,
May, having died at Cottonwood, April 10, 1878, several grandchildren,
one of whom -- Miss Clara SMALL -- has always lived with her
grandparents In Jan. 1877 he was called to California as administrator of
the estate of his brother, J.B. CLARK, a California pioneer His funeral
was held from his late residence on Sunday last at 10am, Rev. J.T. PRIOR
conducting the services followed the remains to their last resting-place
in Hollisters beautiful city of dead During all his years in California
David P. CLARK was a close friend of the writer he had the courage of his
convictions inherited from his revolutionary ancestor, General Israel
PUTNAM ]

mos.
Died -- MURPHY -- in San Francisco, Mar. 19, Mary E., beloved wife of the
late P. MURPHY, daughter of Mrs. J.C. ROCHE, mother of P.J. CULLEN, Mrs.
J.R. DAILEY and Mamie E., Edward, Willie, Marguerite and Frank MURPHY,
and beloved sister of Mrs. E.E. LYNDE, Mrs. G.S. PYLE, and Messrs, W.A.,
J.T., W.H. and J.J. ROCHE; a native of Fall River, Mass., aged 42 years,
10 months.
Died -- STAYTON -- at Gilroy, Mar. 17, Robert Glover STAYTON, aged 75
years, 5 mos., 4 days. [from last Sundays San Jose Mercury -- Robert
G. STAYTON, a pioneer of 1849, and familiarly known as Uncle Rob, Died
Friday afternoon at the residence of his son, William H. STAYTON, at
Gilroy. Up to 2 weeks ago his residence for 3 years had been at San Jose.
He was an old-time miner and at one time was worth half a million of
dollars. The Stayton Quicksilver mines below Hollister were named after
him. For many years he had been a sufferer from asthma and this finally
brought on heart trouble, from which he died. Uncle Bob [spelled 2
ways] was one of the most generous and lovable of men, and was
universally respected. He was a charter member of Keith Lodge F.&A.M., of
Gilroy, and was one of the charter members of the lodge in San Juan,
organized in the early 50s. The only member now living is J. REITHER, of
Gilroy. He leaves 5 children, Mrs. Thomas BRIMSON, of this city [San
Jose], John STAYTON, of Fresno, Ernest and George STAYTON of Tuolumne
county and William H. STAYTON of Gilroy; 15 grandchildren and 2
gr-grandchildren. He was born in Brown county, Ohio, in 1823.]
**31 Mar issue --
Born -- GARAT -- in San Jose, Mar. 27, to the wife of Mr. J.R. GARAT, a
daughter.
Married -- BLACK-PRACHT -- at San Francisco, Mar. 18, Frederick W. BLACK,
of Spokane, Wash., and Fleurette E.C. PRACHT, of San Francisco.
Married -- FREDENBURG-McDONALD -- at Hollister, Mar. 29, by the Rev.
J.R.N. BELL; Charles FREDENBURG to Miss Anna May McDONALD. [The groom is
the well-known popular foreman at the oil wells in the Vallecitos and the
charming bride is the daughter of Mr. Dan McDONALD, a farmer in that
section ]
Died -- SMYTHE -- at Hollister, Mar. 24, Mary SMYTH [spelled 2 ways],
sister to Rev. Father SMYTH, a native of Ireland, aged 27 years. [ died
at the Sacred Heart School after a long illness with consumption The
funeral took place last Monday.]
