Please note: There are very many issues missing in the 1880's -- I will
transcribe what there is, but it's not much. Also note that this one is
the year 1880 (and the *only* issue available for 1880), while the one I
just posted was 1881 -- sorry about getting them out of order.

**Letter From the Comstock --
Dec. 2, 1880,
Ed. Telegraph --
Not seeing anything from this part in your paper, I thought I would jot
down a few items which if you think worth the space, you can publish, if
not, throw it into the waste basket. Last night and today, we have had a
splendid rain with fair prospects for more, and all are rejoicing in the
prospect of early feed for their stock, which is all doing well as there
is an abundance of old feed still on the grounds. The Comstock Mine is
being worked with considerable success by those enterprising gentlemen
Messrs. TRAFTON & GRIFFIN. They are now cleaning up after some $1,500
worth of quicksilver. If any miners deserve success we think they
certainly do, and think they would be still more deserving if they would
keep a little less loco juice around their camp. Last week our usually
quiet settlement was thrown into a little excitement by a difficulty
between some of the neighbors. It seems that Mr. KNOX and Mr. ROAN have
both filed preemption claims on the same piece of land, and on the 22nd
of Nov. Messrs. VAUGHN & ROAN went to where Mr.&Mrs. KNOX were putting up
a house, armed with six-shooters and an axe, and chopped down the
building and split up the timbers; as I understand, the title to the
land, as well as the right to settle disputes in that manner is to be
tested before the proper authorities. I have nothing to say who I think
has the best right to the land, but all with whom I have conversed on the
subject strongly condemn that mode of settling difficulties between
neighbors.
Signed, H.T. JEFFERSON
Misses Susie D. and Lula L. MOORE, left for Martinez last Sunday.
Jo. THORP intends to remove to Missouri next Fall and engage in the
practice of law.
Misses Mattie CHAPPELL and Annie THOMASSON will spend their vacation in
Gilroy.
Miss Flora CONOVER, of Monterey, will spend the holidays in Hollister
with her sister, Mrs. BOOTH.
Mr. J.P. WILKES returned from Stockton last Saturday. He reports times
lively and bottomless mud.
In conversation with Louis RAGGIO last week we were informed that he had
made 1,000 gallons of wine, enough for family use, and to treat friends
during the coming year. Friend RAGGIO evidently does not believe in
using much wine.
Mr. Charles POMEROY was called East last Monday by the serious illness of
his father.
Some person has stolen upwards of 3 cords of wood from W.A. BOGGS in the
last few months. Mr. BOGGS, naturally enough, is becoming tired of the
business, and warns the thief that his next trip will be the cause of
giving the doctor a job.
Harry MEYER, of Salinas, is in Hollister superintending MEYER &
FRIEDLANDERS store during the absence of Mose O. MEYER in the city,
where he has gone in the hopes that a few weeks of recreation and
relaxation from business will improve his health.
Last Thursday at San Juan, Tom OCONNOR was noticed to be very much
interested in the discussion of a local topic, which had appeared in some
of the county papers. When asked his opinion he replied, confessing his
ignorance of the incident that was causing comment, stating by way of
apology that he took the Enterprise, and could not be expected to know
anything of local matters. The apology was deemed sufficient.

**It is Reported --
-That Sue SHORT has rented LEONARDs Hotel at San Benito
-That Foster POMEROY intends engaging in the stock business in the
southern counties.
-That Ike JOHNSON is materially improving the place he recently purchased
on the Bolsa.
-That G.W. CHICK has bought the San Benito Stage line.
-That Judge BROWNs zeal at saying grace was hardly sufficient to repress
his appetite the other day when he got home from Hollister, and he ended
up his prayer in the following unpunctuated manner: And bless us all for
Christs sake Joe pass the potatoes.
**San Juan --
On last Thursday we visited the ancient burg and hereby acknowledge our
thanks for the kind welcome accorded us by the boys. Around at Joe
HERITAGEs we met many old friends, made the acquaintance of several whom
we hope to class in the same category, and also added a number of names
to our subscription list. Judge HERITAGE is a warm-hearted, genial
gentleman, as attested by a large circle of friends. Just across the
street Mr. BULLIER lathers and shaves the bearded portion of San Juans
population. Nearby Louis SHEARER has his headquarters. It is in this
portion of town that BOWMAN & Sons have their wagon shop, and make as
good a vehicle as runs on 4 wheels. Dr. CARGILL, we are informed has a
large and increasing practice, besides being druggist, postmaster,
telegraph operator, and an officer in 2 or 3 lodges. The Doctor is a
pleasant, companionable gentleman, and we are glad to know that he is
doing well. A.L. GRAEME supplies the town and adjacent country with fresh
meat. _.M. FILOUCHEAU keeps a wine saloon, and deals in novelties, near
by. He also has a restaurant in connection. Here we regaled the inner man
with one of the best beef steaks that we ever got between our molars. We
do not know who deserves the greater credit, Mr. GREAME for supplying the
public with such a good article of meat, or Mons. FILOUCHEAU for his
superior method of cooking it. Mr. CAISSON also keeps a restaurant. In
the mercantile business, Fred BACHER, Jim BOWIE take the lead. J.A.
ANDERSON deals in stoves, tinware, etc., and BRIETBARTH mends soles and
sells boots and shoes for a living. The San Juan Brewery, BEUTLER & BECK,
proprietors, is marked by the unique sign of Lager, you bet. Of course
our well-known temperance proclivities and hygienic ideas, were
sufficient argument to justify us in refusing a drop of crathur. But
John MULLIGAN (he is Captain of the Mulligan Guards) informs us that a
journalist whose residence is not a great distance from Hollister, was so
affected by a brief visit to this town that he saw double and treble
Litigants will please take note that San Juan is well supplied with legal
talent. J.F. McMAHON and R.H. BROTHERTON, were on last Thursday engaged
in a little tilt in the judicial arena. George CHALMERS occupying the
position of judge
