notable figure in the history of this State and county. Deceased had been
ailing for over a year past with an aggravated stomach trouble, and
passed calmly away last Tuesday evening about 6 o’clock. Deceased, the
3rd son of Patrick and Margaret BREEN, deceased, was born at Keokuk,
Iowa, March 12, 1837 and came over-land with his father, mother, and the
rest of his relatives in company with the ill-fated DONNER Party. He was
then 10 years of age and spent his youth and early manhood in this
county. He followed farming, as a pursuit, all his life, and by
foresight, industry, and lucky investments, amassed quite a fortune. He
was an unassuming, warm-hearted man; of strict integrity and upright
character, he exacted the same attributes from all his friends. If a
friend to a man, he was a warm one. His charity was large and
unostentatious, and the poor at San Juan will sadly miss his many
benefactions. Whilst a man of few words, yet once interested in any
measure, he made his advocacy or opposition known in no uncertain way. He

existence yet. He also prepared timbers in the redwoods and built a small
house on San Fernando St. between First and Market, back of the Catholic
Church, the college now standing on the ground. The Messrs. WILSON came
to Gilroy in Jan., 1851, being first attracted here by the vast number of
