A Pretty Wedding -- At the residence of the bride’s parents, Mr.&Mrs.
C.T. BURDICK, 152 Adams St., East San Jose, on Sept. 28th, Mr. Arthur E.
REYNOLDS of San Lorenzo, this county, and Miss Bell BURDICK were joined
in the holy bonds of matrimony by the Rev. B.B. BURTON…the groom…is
well-known in this and Monterey counties, having been born and reared to
man’s state in Priest Valley and having completed his education at
Chestnutwood’s Business College, at Santa Cruz…After a brief honeymoon
passed at Monterey and Santa Cruz they will be happy to receive their
friends on the San Lorenzo, near Lonoak, after Oct. 15th.

Died -- COTTLE -- at Tres Pinos, Oct. 7, Bruce COTTLE, native of Oregon,
aged 22 years, 2 moths, 10 days. [from Tres Pinos Items -- …son of Mr.
J.A. COTTLE…] [Laid to Rest -- Bruce COTTLE, a well-known San Jose boy,
who died at Tres Pinos on Saturday last, was laid to rest at Oak Hill
Cemetery, last Monday, says the San Jose ‘Herald.’ Funeral services were
conducted at Woodrow’s Undertaking parlors by Rev. HOPKINS, of College
Park…pall-bearers were J.B. LAMBKIN, Robert BUTLER, Harry WILSON, Willie
HINKLEBEIN, Leo de la ROSA and Joe DESIMONE. Bruce COTTLE was the son of
Joseph A. COTTLE, an old resident of San Jose…He graduated from High
School in 1897...Symptoms of the dread disease consumption soon began…was
taken to Arizona but grew gradually worse. Later he was taken to Tulare
county and when he returned to San Jose 3 months ago it was apparent that
death was but a matter of a few weeks…He was a popular Garden City cycler
in former years and his pall bearers were young men from the wheelmen.]

Died -- SHERMAN -- at Hollister, Oct. 7, Elsa M. SHERMAN, native of New
York, aged 72 years, 2 months, 8 days. [After weeks of suffering, Mrs.
Elsa M. SHERMAN expired at her residence, on North street…Deceased was
the mother of Frank and Fred SHERMAN, Mrs. Emma BOOMHOWER, of Nevada;
Mrs. Al HAWKINS, of Woodland and Mr. Clarence SHERMAN and Mrs. Charley
WEBBER, of this place…universally respected for her many sterling
virtues…death resulted from causes connected with her advanced age. The
funeral took place last Monday afternoon…]

Died -- STEWART -- at Omemee, North Dakota, Oct. 4, infant daughter of
Mr.&Mrs. Alex STEWART, aged 9 months, 20 days. […Mrs. STEWART was
formerly a resident of Hollister, the daughter of Mrs. M.E. HAUN, of this
place.]

Died -- BOOMHOWER -- at Palo Alto, Oct. 12, Emma BOOMHOWER, a native of
California, aged 14 years. […a niece of the SHERMAN brothers…arrived
here, from her home in Nevada, a couple of weeks ago, in greatly impaired
health…the young lady was suffering from a tumor…the young lady died on
board the train at Palo Alto yesterday morning whilst being taken to
McNUTT’s Hospital, San Francisco, by Dr. TEBBETTS, to be operated upon.]

Suit for Divorce -- Jennie HAZEN…has commenced suit…against Clarence E.
HAZEN for a divorce. The parties were married in 1884, at C_arks,
Nebraska, and habitual intemperance is the principal ground…

Salinas but now of Hollister, and Miss Elizabeth Francisco WATTENBAUGH,
the ceremony to take place at the residence of the bride’s parents in
Livermore at 1 o’clock Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 24th…

Bitterwater, were naturalized in the Superior Court last Saturday.

Died -- MATTAOAS -- at San Juan, Oct. 13, Antone MATTAOAS, native of
Italy, aged 47 years.

Died -- LAHIFF -- at Watsonville, Oct. 24, David LAHIFF, a native of
Ireland, aged 58 years. […an old-time resident of this county…carried off
by consumption which he contracted, some time ago, whilst laboring in the
depths of the New Idria Mines. In his calling of a miner he was
considered an expert…a man of courage…He leaves a widow, 2 sons, James
and David LAHIFF, and 2 daughters, Mrs. Wm. McCARTHY, of Saratoga, and
Mrs. Frank MURPHY, of Watsonville. The funeral took place from the Sacred
Heart Church, yesterday…]

Joseph PAYTON died at his home in Centerville, Ia., on Sept. 30, aged 63
years. Mr. PAYTON leaves a widow, 4 sons -- James, Senter, Henry, and
Corse -- and a step-daughter, Mollie G. SPOONER, all prominent members of
the theatrical profession…Joseph PAYTON was born Sept. 12, 1836, in
Shelby county, Mo., and removed to Iowa in 1844...

In the Superior Court, last Monday, a decree of divorce was granted in
the case of Alfred HOLMES vs. Mabel HOLMES…the defendant left her home at
the New Idria mines to come to Hollister in March, 1898, for a month’s
stay…went home to her mother’s house at Quartz, Tuolumne county…her
husband sued for a divorce, to her great satisfaction…

**3 Nov issue --
Born -- BRYANT -- at San Felipe, Oct. 21, to the wife of Al. BRYANT, a
son.

Married -- SAVAGE-WALTENBAUGH -- at the residence of the bride’s parents,
Livermore, Oct. 24, by Rev. Arthur HICKS; Dr. Frank SAVAGE to Miss Lizzie
WALTENBAUGH.

Married -- OVERFELT-LENZ -- in San Jose, Nov. 1, by Rev. Alfred KUMMER;
Miss Rosina Louise LENZ, of San Jose, to Charles F. OVERFELT, of
Hollister. [from 10 Nov issue -- …the San Jose ‘Herald’ of last Saturday
says: “…at the home of the bride’s mother…Charles Franklin OVERFELT and
Rosina Louise LENZ…Jackson OVERFELT, brother of the groom, and Louise
LENZ served gracefully as groomsman and bridesmaid…After the wedding tour
they will make their home in Hollister.”]

Died -- GRIFFITH -- at Los Gatos, Oct. 28, Cordelia GRIFFITH, beloved
wife of Wm. GRIFFITH, a native of Ohio, aged 58 years, 2 months. […With
her husband, W.B. GRIFFTH, she settled in the Santa Clara valley in early
days, near Los Gatos…Later they removed to Union District where they
owned a large tract of land. During the boom this was sold and they
purchased a large ranch at Fairview, near Hollister, where they have
since resided. Besides the widower there is left a large family of grown
sons and daughter…all but one being married…The children are: Wm.
GRIFFITH, of Campbell; John GRIFFITH, Mrs. John DIXON, of Hollister; Mrs.
Annie WALLACE, of Hanford; Miss Cora GRIFFITH; Mrs. D.A. WALKER, of Los
Gatos; Mrs. John BOYD and Mrs. Thos. BOYD, of Santa Barbara; and Dr. A.C.
GRIFFITH, of Santa Rosa. Deceased also leaves a brother, Mr. Harvey
SWICKARD, of Edenvale and many other relatives in Santa Clara county…The
funeral was held at this place last Tuesday…]

It is rumored that Geo. SANDS died at Hilo, H.I., recently. The report
comes from Vic McCRAY, who was informed to that effect by Mr. VINCENT, of
the firm of WILLIAMS, BELSER & Co., who recently returned from Honolulu,
where they are engaged in putting in a sewer system.

Miss Eliza EARDLEY, daughter of J.R. EARDLEY, formerly of this place, was
married on Oct. 26th at Santa Rosa, to Dr. A.E. HARDIN, a prominent young
physician of that place.

The 60th anniversary of Mr.&Mrs. A. CHAPPELL was suitably celebrated last
Wednesday week, at the family residence on Seventh street. The numerous
children of the estimable couple -- including grandchildren -- were
present…

Wedding Anniversary -- Last Monday being the 25th anniversary of the
wedding of Mr.&Mrs. Geo. E. HALL, their many friends in Emmet District
took advantage of the date to give the estimable couple a grand surprise
party at their residence on the Los Muertos….[list of guests]…residents
of Bartlett school district…

Born -- THOMSON -- at Hollister, Nov. 4, to the wife of S.S. THOMSON,
tripletts, 2 sons & 1 daughter.

Born -- RENZ -- at Hollister, Nov. 3, to the wife of G.A. RENZ, a
daughter.

Dr. C.K. FARLEY, formerly of Gilroy and well-known in this place, died at
his home at San Jose, last Monday.

Divorce Suit -- Eugene MARTIN…has brought suit for a divorce…against Mary
E. MARTIN. The complaint alleges that the parties were married at
Hollister in May, 1889, and that defendant has deserted her home.

daughter.

daughter.

Married -- DUNHAM-MILES -- at Anacortes, Wash., Oct. 22, F.A. DUNHAM and
Mrs. Letha MILES.

Died -- SILK -- at Hollister, Nov. 11, Mollie SILK, a native of
California, aged 31 years.

Died -- PACILIO -- at New Idria, Nov. 10, G. Carlo PACILIO, a native of
Italy, aged 24 years.

Died -- BLACK -- at Hollister, Nov. 11, Ardis Fidelia, beloved daughter
of Mr.&Mrs. W.W. BLACK, aged 3 months. […had just pulled through a rather
severe attack of croup and was apparently on the high road to recovery,
when death overtook it.]

Died -- HAY -- at Hollister, Nov. 15, Eliza Phoebe, beloved wife of J.D.
HAY, and mother of Mrs. W.D. VanBUSKIRK. […she suffered, a long time
past, with inflammatory rheumatism in its most painful form…The funeral
took place yesterday afternoon from her late residence…]

Died -- PEREIRA -- at San Juan, Nov. 13, Rosa Florine PEREIRA, a native
of California, aged 8 months, 15 days.

Died -- ZIMMERMAN -- at Bear Valley, Nov. 16, Blas ZIMMERMAN, a native of
Germany, aged 74 years. […an early settler in this county…He leaves a
widow and 2 daughters (Mrs. G.W. JUSTICE and Mrs. W.S. HAYDON)…The
interment takes place at 10 o’clock, this morning, at Willow Creek.]

James O’BRIEN, who returned from the Hawaiian Islands this week, confirms
the intelligence of the death of George SANDS at a hospital in Honolulu.

Neil MURPHY, formerly Recorder of Santa Barbara county, died last
Wednesday, at the Lane Hospital, San Francisco. Deceased was well known
here.

**24 Nov. issue --
Born -- THOMPSON -- at Hollister, Nov. 20, to the wife of Harry THOMPSON,
a daughter.

Born -- HUTCHINGS -- at Hollister, Nov. 17, to the wife of F.W.
HUTCHINGS, a daughter.

Died -- O’CONNOR -- at San Francisco, Nov. 20, Maggie O’CONNOR, beloved
wife of Hugh O’CONNOR, a native of Ireland, aged 29 years, 9 months.
[…niece of the late E.B. MURPHY…died of consumption. The remains were
brought down here and buried in the Catholic Cemetery. Deceased was a
most estimable woman, and leaves a husband and 2 small children…]

Died -- SANDS -- at Honolulu, H.I., Oct. 6, Geo. F. SANDS, a native of
New York, aged 36 years.

Died -- ROZAS -- at San Juan, Nov. 21, Ambrosio ROZAS, a native of Spain,
aged 80 years, 5 months. [Deceased was a pioneer of this State having
came here in 1849. On his voyage to Mexico the ship he was on was wrecked
in mid-ocean, and he clung to a spar in the ocean for 2 days and 3 nights
before being picked up, landing at Santo Domingo. Deceased was in several
wrecks, on the ocean, during his lifetime. After stopping in Mexico for
awhile, he came to this State, where, at one time, he was a very
prosperous and wealthy cattle man. He leaves 4 sons to mourn his loss.]
[Ambrosio ROZAS, a pioneer resident of San Juan and father of Joaquin
ROZAS, died last Tuesday.]

The marriage of Mr. Rush JOSE and Miss Angie CROW is announced for next
Thursday, Thanksgiving Day.

Death of Mrs. ESTRADA -- Mrs. Conseption ESTRADA died in Watsonville last
Saturday morning after a lingering illness. She was an early pioneer of
Monterey county and was the wife of the late Rafael ESTRADA and owner of
the Guadalupe rancho. She was born in 1829 and was aged 70 years, 3
months. She is an aunt to Mr. ESTRADA, bookkeeper in the Farmer’s Union
of Salinas and sister to Ygnacio MALARIN. The remains were interred at
the Catholic Cemetery, at Salinas, last Sunday.

Hollister. The bride…is the daughter of R.E. SHORE, ex-supervisor of San
Benito county…Misses Ida GREEN and Roxie LYNN acted as bridesmaids…The
groom was attended by the bride’s brother, Mr. Ernest SHORE…]

Died -- HOLMES -- in San Francisco, Nov. 27, Laura Etta, beloved wife of
William E. HOLMES, daughter of J.M. RANGE, and sister of Mrs. M.H. FONDA,
Mrs. E.E. ROBERTS, Mrs. C.C. WHITE, Charles, Dale and Howard RANGE, a
native of California, aged 28 years, 5 mos., 16 days. […a great shock to
all who know her. She lived here for many years…The remains were brought
to this place for interment.]

Died -- McLINCHEY -- at the City and County Hospital near Hollister, Nov.
30, William T. McLINCHEY, a native of Ohio, aged 77 years. […an old
resident of this place…a genial old man, well-liked by everyone who knew
him. He has been in failing health for the past 2 years.]

Gilroy ‘Advocate’ -- Death of Elmer B. RIVES -- Elmer B. RIVES died on
Thursday at his home in this city of consumption, aged 30 years, 4
months. Deceased was a native of Georgia, but came to California with his
parents in infancy. He attended the Gilroy school and was married a few
years since to a Miss LAIRD, by whom he had 3 small children. While
inspecting diseased cows 2 years ago he contracted consumption…The
funeral will take place Saturday afternoon…from the family residence on
Church street. Besides the wife and 3 children, he leaves a mother, 2
sisters -- Mrs. Eunice KING of Quien Sabe and Mrs. Jack ROBINS of Gilroy
-- 2 brothers, John and Preston RIVES.

daughter.

Died -- BALDWIN -- in Lemmore, Nov. 27, John S. BALDWIN, son of Mr.&Mrs.
E.E. BALDWIN, aged 16 years, 9 mos., 1 day.

>From Salinas ‘Index’ -- Old Man Found Dead -- Saturday evening Coroner
MULLER was notified that a dead man had been found near King City…He
found the remains to be those of an old hermit named Jose ESPINOSA, a
native of California and 65 years old. The deceased owned a small
homestead on the Poncho Rico near Peach Tree, where he had a few horses,
cattle and goats. As he lived by himself and was seldom seen by anyone,
his absence was not noticed and would not have been, but for the fact
that Ernest BENGARD, a vaquero on the Peach Tree ranch, while driving
some cattle to pasture about a half mile from ESPINOSA’s cabin, noticed a
fully saddled and bridles horse tied to the post near the cabin. Next
morning BENGARD, with William CAMPBELL, another vaquero…saw the horse
still tied…Deceased had no family or relatives as far as is known. His
body was taken in charge by Undertaker HARRINGTON and interred at King
City.

Judge COFFEY of the San Francisco County Probate Court, decided yesterday
in favor of Anselmo de LAVEAGA, the party who claimed to be the son of
J.M. de LAVEAGA.

Died -- SNIBLEY -- at Hollister, Dec. 12, Mary E., beloved wife of J.J.
SNIBLEY, a native of California, aged 36 years. […wife of John J.
SNIBLEY…The funeral took place yesterday from the M.E. Church, South.]

Died -- HORNBERY -- at Panoche, Dec. 10, Chas. HORNBERY, a native of
Russia, aged 72 years.

Died -- PIERCE -- at Hollister, Dec. 8, Lillie May PIERCE, aged 3 months,
a native of California.

Died -- ALEXANDER -- at Hollister, Dec. 12, David ALEXANDER, a native of
California, aged 37 years.

Died -- SOTO -- at San Juan, Dec. 13, Benicio SOTO, a native of
California, aged 26 years. [Deceased was the son of Mr.&Mrs. Benicio
SOTO, of San Juan, and a hard working, estimable young man. He was in the
employ of MILLER &LUX, Volta and contracted a cold which turned into
pneumonia. He was taken back to San Juan, and died after 14 days illness.
The funeral took place, yesterday, at San Juan.]

Died -- HOPCROFT -- at Hollister, Dec. 13, Thomas HOPCROFT, a native of
England, aged 65 years. […father of Coroner Chas. HOPCROFT…from an attack
of apoplexy. Deceased had for 20 years occupied a perambulator, the
victim of paralysis, caused by rheumatism. He was a kindly old man…]

The engagement of Harry L. TOWLE, formerly of Tres Pinos, to Miss May
WOOD, daughter of H.J. WOOD, a leading contractor and builder, of
Watsonville, is announced. The wedding ceremony is scheduled to take
place about Christmas.

The Superior Court granted Eugene MARTIN a divorce from Mary MARTIN, last
