Born -- JOHNSON -- in Medford, Jackson Co., Oregon, Feb. 26, to the wife
of J.O. JOHNSON, a daughter.
Born -- TUTTLE -- at Pacific Grove, Feb. 27, to the wife of C.K. TUTTLE,
a son.
Married -- COTTER-OHARE -- at the Catholic Church, Salinas City, Feb.
26th, by Rev. Father SORRENTINI; James COTTER, of San Francisco, and
Lizzie OHARE, of Salinas.
Married -- REINHARDT-OECKEL -- in San Jose, at the German M.E. Church,
Feb. 27, by the Rev. F. BONN; Otto A. REINHARDT (brother of E. REINHARDT
of Salinas) and Eugenie J. OECKEL.
Married -- DAUGHERTY-LITTLEFIELD -- at the residence of Mr. Hiram COREY,
Buena Vista rancho, Mar. 7, by Rev. Geo. McCORMICK; G.A. DOUGHERTY, Esq.,
and Miss Emma LITTLEFIELD, both of Salinas. [The ceremony took place at
11am and was strictly private, only immediate relatives being present. A
wedding breakfast was partaken of at 11:30, and the happy couple took
their departure northward on the 2pm train. They will return next week
and settle down in Salinas, their future home. The bride is the
accomplished niece of Mr. Hiram COREY, and the groom is one of the most
estimable young men in town. They have the best wishes ]
Died -- MATHEISEN -- at Natividad, Feb. 23, of dropsy, Mrs. Anna Margaret
MATHEISEN, aged 73 years, 10 months.
Died -- SOUZA -- near Blanco, Feb. 27, of consumption, Manuel SOUZA, aged
24 years.
Died -- MERRITT -- in Monterey Feb. 27, Juana Castro de MERRITT, aged 68
years, 8 months, 3 days.
Pacific Grove Notes -- Miss Bessie HUMPHRY was married in San Francisco
Monday to W.A. HITCHCOCK of Tacoma, W.T. She is a niece of Mrs. S.
HUMPHRY of the Grove, and resided here with her uncle, Mr. PADDELFORD.
She was highly esteemed by all of her acquaintances. The young couple go
on directly to Tacoma, where their future home will be.
Kings City Items -- a son was born unto the house of Frank ADAMS, on the
San Lorenzo, Feb. 24th.
Notable Wedding at Pacific Grove -- Quite a wedding took place in St.
Marys-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church at Pacific Grove, last Tuesday, Mar.
4. The names of the contracting parties were Cyrus Ball McCORMICK, son of
the millionaire manufacturer of mowers and reapers, of Chicago, and Miss
Harriett Bradley HAMMOND of the same city. Special cars brought 60
relatives and friends of the bride and groom, including the family
pastor, Rev. Mr. VIBIT, who came along to see that the knot was properly
tied [long story following are relatives of the couple] The brides
cousin, little Lizzie MORSE, bearing a white floral wreath and carrying a
basket of beautiful white flowers then came the bride on the arm of her
aunt, Mrs. E.S. STICKNEY, who gave her away. The other members of the
bridal party followed. Richard McCORMICK, brother of the groom, acted as
best man, and Miss Nita McCORMICK, sister of the groom, attended the
bride The bride is a handsome blonde and looked very lovely

Married -- HAMILTON-KING -- at the residence of the brides uncle, Kings
City, Mar. 6, by Rev. J.S. McGOWAN; Wm. C. HAMILTON and Miss Birdie KING.
Married -- ADAMS-LEIGH -- at the residence of the brides parents in San
Francisco, Mar. 5, Dr. Frank L. ADAMS, of Oakland, and Mary W. LEIGH,
daughter of Hon. J.W. LEIGH, Receiver of the U.S. Land Office, San
Francisco.
Married -- HALL-BEVANS -- at the Pajaro Hotel, Pajaro, Mar. 12, by Rev.
J.W. BRYANT; Harry J. HALL, of Kings City, and Miss Edith BEVANS, of
Gilroy.
Hollister Advance -- Wm. DIXON, a well known resident of the Santa Ana
valley, committed suicide at his home at an early hour Friday morning.
For a few days prior, the deceased had been in poor health, and was given
to despondent moods. He was in very fair circumstances, and no cause can
be assigned for the act. At an early hour on Friday he arose, and an hour
later was found by his son hanging by a ¾ inch rope to a beam in the
barn. The body was still warm when discovered. A jury rendered a verdict
in accordance with the above facts.
Miss Ruth TURNBULL, daughter of General TURNBULL, died in San Francisco
on Wednesday of last week. She was aged 20 years and had recently
returned from a visit to Europe.
The marriage of Miss May BECK, daughter of Hon. Thos. BECK, and Wm.
REILLY, Sheriff of Ventura county, is announced to take place next month.
**21 Mar issue --
Born -- SIEGHOLD -- in Salinas City, Mar. 20th, to the wife of C.
SIEGHOLD, a son.
Died -- BRAFFIT -- in Salinas City, Mar. 16, Mrs. Lydia BRAFFITT, wife of
Jas. BRAFFIT, a native of Ohio, aged 66 years.
Lizzie TUTTLE died of diphtheria at the home of her parents, in San
Miguel Canyon, last Tuesday.
Edward McDONAGH died at Pleyto on the 12th instant, from injuries
received by being thrown out of his buggy. The deceased was the father of
H.C., Patrick, and J.F. McDONAGH, and Mrs. Catherine WILLIAMSON, Mrs.
Maggie BUSHNELL, Mrs. Ellen J. HEINSEN and Miss Teresa McDONAGH. He had
resided in Monterey and San Luis Obispo for over 16 years. He was born
near the city of Londonderry, Ireland, and was 74 years of age at the
time of his death. The San Miguel Messenger gives the following account
of the fatal accident: Mr. McDONAGH was driving home from San Miguel on
Feb. 25th, when he was thrown from his buggy, the horse having shied and
bolted suddenly while Mr. McDONAGH stood up to arrange the robes. The
unfortunate man was throw out and severely bruised and shaken up,
sustaining internal injuries which resulted in his death. Dr. CAIN, Dr.
MILLER of Stockton, and Dr. McGOWAN of Jolon were kept in attendance up
to the time of his death. The funeral took place on Thursday from his
home near Pleyto, whence the remains were conducted to the San Antonio
Mission cemetery, a large concourse of friends being in attendance. Mr.
McDONAGH was well known and universally respected by all with whom he
came in contact, and who now mourn the unfortunate sequel to his fatal
accident.
San Lucas and Vicinity -- Warner FOLDEN, an aged gentleman who came to
this section some months since and returned to his Nebraska home to sell
out and arrange to remove here, arrived in San Lucas a few weeks ago in a
very feeble health, and was taken out in the Jolon country. He has since
died, and was buried Sunday. Deceased was a church member and a veteran
G.A.R.
Oregon Statesman -- Samuel MEEK, who recently died at Eugene, left an
estate valued at $150,000, and A.A. MEEK, his nephew, has given a bond of
$300,000 as administrator, the largest bond ever filed in that county.
The deceased left $33,000 to his nephew, A.A. MEEK, $10,000 to his
stepson and $1800 to an old man who had worked for him a long time.
Monterey Cypress -- The remains of Edward ESCOBAR, a young man born in
this town were brought from San Luis Obispo on last Wednesday evening and
buried here Thursday. Deceased was 26 years of age and leaves a mother
and several brothers and sisters here. He died with brain fever.

-Mar. 18th; Fred W. RIST and Mary E. RUSSING, both of Peach Tree.
Wm. PATTERSON and bride, of Tucson, Arizona, have arrived in Monterey, on
a visit to the mother of the former, Mrs. L.S. TOOTHAKER.
Manuel de Souza BARROS, a native of the Azores, was admitted to
citizenship on the testimony of Manuel SOARES and A.M. SILVA.
In Memoriam -- Tribute to Sir Knight E.J. SWIFT, by Watsonville
Commandery No. 22, K.T. -- E.J. SWIFT was made an Entered Apprentice in
Salinas Lodge in 1875...received the degrees in Santa Cruz in 1883...in
Watsonville in 1883...E.J. SWIFT was born in the State of New York, Mar.
6th, 1848, and died in Santa Cruz, Cal., Feb. 1st, 1889. He immigrated
with his parents to California at an early age and settled in Gilroy.
Arriving at mans estate, he engaged in hoteling, first in Gilroy, then
in Salinas, and finally in Santa Cruz He was one of Santa Cruzs first
citizens
**28 Mar issue --
A sad accident, wherein a boy killed a much-loved playmate, took place at
Hollister last week. Albert FRANKLIN and Robert COCHRAN, 2 boys aged
about 14 years, were playing with a pistol. They had removed the
cartridges from the chamber, but FRANKLIN replaced the cartridges unknown
to COCHRAN. The latter afterwards picked up the weapon and, in a playful
manner, took aim at FRANKLIN and fired. The ball entered FRANKLINs
forehead, killing him almost instantly.
Thos. LYNN, a native of Canada, was admitted to citizenship last Monday
on the testimony of Job WOOD, Jr., and T.J. RIORDAN.
Geo. LAMPE, a native of Germany, was admitted to citizenship last Monday
on the testimony of Thomas PRESCOTT and E. MICHAELS.
