Monterey Items -- Solemn requiem mass was celebrated in the Catholic
church on Wednesday morning at 9 o’clock by Rev. Father CASANOVA for the
repose of the soul of Rev. Juan B. CAMELLAS, who died at Magdalena,
Mexico, on July 28th, aged 64 years. Father CAMELLAS was parish priest in
Monterey from 1856 to 1864, and previously from 1850 to 1856 he was
stationed at Santa Cruz, and his memory is revered by the members of his
former parishes in both places. The music by the choir Wednesday was very
impressive and excellently well rendered. The choir consisted of Miss
Adelaide ESCOLLE, Mrs. A. MANUEL, Miss Merced CASTRO, Manuel V. SILVA and
Mrs. T.J. FIELD, organist.

Miss Susie WILSON, a San Miguel ‘Messenger’ typo, was married last
Thursday to Henry C. CAVANAUGH, of Santa Margarita.

Found Dead in Bed -- Bartholomew CONOLLY was found dead in bed at his
home in Indian Valley last Friday morning. Coroner FRANCEE being
telegraphed for, went down and held an inquest Saturday. From the
evidence adduced it appears that the deceased had gone to bed on Thursday
night apparently as well as usual. He was unmarried and had no one living
with him, except a hired man, who slept in the barn. Upon going into the
house Friday morning the hired man found his employer dead. The verdict
of the jury was to the effect that death resulted from natural causes.
The deceased was a native of Ireland, about 70 years of age. The remains
were buried at San Miguel.

Strange Meeting -- Years before California became a part of the United
States, a Scotch boy, named David SPENCE, was sent out to the Pacific
coast by a mercantile house as its agent to purchase hides and tallows.
He settled at Monterey, married a California young lady, grew in honor
and wealth, and had “Don” prefixed to his name.

It was the custom of the people of Monterey to give a grand fandango to
the officers of any man-of-war which visited their harbor. One day an
English man-of-war appeared in the harbor, and Don David SPENCE was sent
on board to tender the hospitalities of the citizens to the officers.

The captain thanked him, but said he must decline the invitation, as the
vessel would put to sea that night. He gave, however, leave to the
officers to go on shore, and the first lieutenant accepted a seat in Don
David’s boat.

“If I am not mistaken, you are a countryman of mine,” said the
lieutenant. “I am Scotch,” answered SPENCE.

Conversation disclosed that they were both natives of the same town.

“Let me see, let me see,” said the officer, “Yes, I knew a widow SPENCE
who lived there in a handsome house a long time ago -- yes, and she had
one son about my age.”

“Your name, lieutenant, is BARCLAY?” said SPENCE.

“It is,” replied the officer.

“Oh, it must be so!” said SPENCE, throwing open his arms. “You are the
boy I thrashed 35 years ago, for breaking my mother’s window on a
Christmas morning.”

“The same.”

The 2 men were locked in each other’s arms; and the captain, on hearing
of the recognition, remained in the harbor over night, so that they had
the fandango.

County Clerk RIORDAN last Saturday issued a marriage license to Francisco
LUIS, of Dakota, and Maria M. de ALMIRA, of Blanco, Monterey county.

The Santa Margarita ‘Times’ says: “Mrs. E. SANCHES went to Kings City
Tuesday morning. She returned on the evening train. The ride was too much
for her, and she unexpectedly took sick. Mr. WEBSTER, the conductor, was
equal to the emergency and telegraphed for a buggy to be in readiness on
the arrival of the train to convey her to her home. The lady was
persevering, however, and walked home. Fifteen minutes after arriving
home, she gave birth to a bouncing boy. Master Santa Margarita Manuel
SANCHEZ is a promising little fellow.”

Unto the house of Mr. ABEHE at Corralitos, Santa Cruz county, Sept. 8,
1889, was born a son weighing only 1 pound. The youngster is perfectly
formed, bright, lively and is doing well. The wee tot will probably be
one of the attractions of the Watsonville Fair which will open next
Wednesday.

An Indigent Import -- An old man giving as his name Antonio PURARIS has
been lying on the road between Salinas and Natividad since Sunday, and
was taken up as an insane person and brought to town by Mr. MINEZ. Judge
ALEXANDER organized as a commission Drs. EDWARDS and STAFFORD, and their
inquest was that the man was not insane but feeble-minded, and he was
ordered discharge. The old man states that he has been living with Pedro
RIAL, near San Juan, in San Benito county. It has been reported, although
not in evidence, that the old man was shipped to San Francisco, and from
there shipped back, and that when found, he was trying to work his way
back to his former home. He will probably be sent to San Benito county by
Chairman SAMUELS.

Amateur Theatricals - Matrimony -- It will be remembered that, on the 2nd
of last March, the Monterey Amateur Dramatic Company produced at Central
Hall, in Salinas, “Nevada, or the Lost Mine.” In the cast was Miss Gussie
TIBBETTS, who personated “Moselle, a Waif,” and accompanying the party
was Grant TOWLE. On March 8th, Grant TOWLE appeared at the Clerk’s office
and procured a marriage license, in the affidavit for which TOWLE was set
down as 24 years old and Miss TIBBETS 20, both native Californians and
resident of Monterey. It is stated that up to the time of the
preparations for the theatricals, it was generally thought that Miss
TIBBETTS was engaged to another party. Whatever may have been the cause,
her parents successfully opposed her marriage with TOWLE for over 6
months. Last Tuesday, about midnight, they appeared before Rev. H.S.
SNODGRASS and were married, and immediately took a carriage for Salinas,
arriving at the Jeffery House early in the morning and taking the morning
train to San Francisco. Young TOWLE is a son of Capt. TOWLE of the
Pacific Coast Steamship Company and kept a cigar store in Monterey. Miss
TIBBETS is daughter of the proprietor of the Central Hotel in Monterey.
Both are estimable young people and among the first society people of
Monterey and it is the wish of their acquaintances in Salinas that their
matrimonial voyage may be prosperous.
